So many things I liked about this. It's my favorite in the series so far. If you're a fan of the friends to lovers trope and/or hurt/comfort I think you're going to love this.
We saw some of Ben and Maddox in the prior books of the series but this can be read as a standalone. You may remember them as the two guys that are totally opposites but are roommates and best friends. When this story starts they've already crossed the line from friends to more but neither is dealing with it well. There is a ton of tension between them and their friendship is in trouble. They go on a mission and Maddox is badly injured. This brings reality crashing down on Ben. He can no longer deny his feelings for Maddox but it's complicated since he is adamantly opposed to committed relationships.
Their romance was really sweet and while they were definitely struggling, there was no over the top angst or drama. Ben gets in his own way a bunch of times but you never doubt how much he loves Maddox. He just needs to resolve some of his personal issues first.
One of my favorite things in this book was Maddox's character. He was a Christian and while he wasn't a "wait till marriage, virgin", he did want to only be in a sexual relationship with someone he had a commitment to. I thought this was a nice change and I don't think I've ever read a character like this in non-Christian romance before (not that I read Christian romance at all but still.....you get the idea) I love when authors give us outside the box, unique characters. Maddox had clear ideas what he wanted and what he expected in how he was treated and he didn't compromise his beliefs.
*never fear those of you who like smexy times in your stories, these two do get down & dirty during the story & when they do they're smoking hot together*
thought the writing was really good and there was a lot of depth to the characters and the plot overall. I've enjoyed the other books in this series but this was my favorite. I thought it was really, really good.
Never fall for your best friend…
Pushing thirty, with his reenlistment looming, decorated navy sniper Maddox Horvat is taking a long look at what he really wants in life. And what he wants is Ben Tovey. It isn't smart, falling for his best friend and fellow SEAL, but ten years with Ben has forged a bond so intimate Maddox can't ignore it. He needs Ben by his side forever—heart and soul.
Ben admits he likes what he's seen—his friend's full lower lip and the perfect muscles of his ass have proved distracting more than once. But Ben's still reeling from a relationship gone to hell, and he's not about to screw up his friendship with Maddox, too.
Until their next mission throws Ben and Maddox closer together than ever before, with only each other to depend on.
Now, in the lonely, desperate hours awaiting rescue, the real challenge—confronting themselves, their future and their desires—begins. Man to man, friend to friend, lover to lover.
