Flame's Dawn

A Hell to Pay Novella / Prequel

Barnaby and Jane first meet in Vietnam where he is a soldier and she is a communications specialist. An attack on their location throws them together into an adrenaline fueled encounter. Afterwards they are separated and it's years before they see each other again. Jane is then working undercover for the DEA and Barnaby continues his quest for obtaining souls for the demon he's indebted to.

This is a prequel to the rest of the series where you have met Barnaby before. This story shows you more of his history and backstory and was good in that regard. The story is action packed and takes some interesting twists. Where it fell short for me was the relationship between he and Jane. It was very insta-love and I really didn't feel anything between them. Also, as a prequel, it didn't explain what Barnaby was until really late in the story. I had read one of the full length novels beforehand so I knew but if I would have been starting with this book I would have been a little confused.

Overall this was an average read. It is a good addition to current fans of the series.
