This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and I'm glad to say that it didn't disappoint. This story picks up with Flynn and Laurel about a year down the road. They're doing pretty well together and their relationship is stable. They are still enjoying their kink and have embraced it as part of their relationship.
Things are going well until a life event happens that throws them both for a loop. It makes them question what they want in life and where their relationship is going. Laurel in particular starts struggling with the fact that she still isn't working in her chosen profession and she's kind of stuck in a transitional phase. Through the course of the story both characters second guess themselves and their relationship in some ways and they both struggle a bit with some depression and self doubt.
I felt that the author gave us a very realistic portrayal of a struggle a lot of couples go through. It doesn't matter how strong your relationship is sometimes things happen that are beyond your control and you either get stronger because of it or your relationship falls apart. Both characters are emotionally raw for parts of the book and my heart went out to them both. Laurel is a very likable heroine for me and I adore Flynn. He's a fantastic hero. He's a bit gruff but he's so honest and straight forward he makes me all swoony. He's a bit alpha but it never crosses into a negative area and his devotion to Laurel is 100%, without fail.
For me the first book was more erotica. It was a short period of time in the couple's life and looked more at the kink side of their relationship. This book took it to the next level. This made it a love story. By the end I felt these two got a great happily ever after and I was a super happy reader.
The consistent strong writing style, in addition to characters that I find very realistic, makes this author one of my favorites in the romance genre. This book is not a stand alone and you need to read the first book, Willing Victim, before you read this. You should also note the warnings on it as these contain some kink play that may be offensive to some readers.
The long-awaited sequel to Willing Victim.
Nine months ago Laurel walked into an underground boxing gym and found herself mesmerized by a stranger named Flynn—a man who fights hard and loves harder. Since then he’s taken her places where fear and curiosity clash in exquisite pleasure, where trust is the price of ecstasy, and in time their brutal games have become her kink as much as his.
But when real life intrudes and hard decisions demand action, will these two whose bond is rooted in fantasy take shelter in each other’s arms, or discover that lust is no substitute for a lasting commitment?
