Penryn & the End of Days, #1

What a fabulous story. I have to admit I had looked at this book before but skipped over it because it is labeled YA and that is not my thing. I ended up reading it when it was picked for me in a challenge. I willingly admit......I was wrong. I should never have ignored this book. It should be noted that while the heroine is 17 nothing else in the book has a typical YA feel.

Penryn is 17 and is caring for her crippled 7 year old sister and her mentally ill mother. Times are very hard as 6 weeks prior angels have completely destroyed our world. Cities are torn apart, many are dead and gangs are ruling the streets and victimizing everyone they come across. While attempting to move her family to a safer area, Penryn comes across an injured angel, Raffe. While trying to help him her sister is stolen by another angel.

Penryn quickly learns that not all angels are created equal and not even they know why they are destroying her world. Penryn and Raffe end up being each other's only allies and they head off on an adventure to get her sister back and to help him in something he needs.

This books is fast paced and hard to put down. There is great world building and there are a lot of unique and interesting characters. The author immediately draws you in to this story and you immediately feel for Penryn and what she is going through. The writing is wonderful and there were a few moments where a simple sentence was strong enough to shock me or bring out another strong emotion. You feel the character's pain and your heart breaks for both Penryn and Raffe in the losses they go through. There is a sweet and beautiful relationship that builds between the two and while it develops subtly it is one of the best parts of the story. I highly recommend this book to those of you who enjoy this genre of book. This really is one of the best stories I have read in the last year.
