The Body in the Wardrobe

Faith Fairchild Mysteries, #23

This latest Faith Fairchild mystery moves back and forth between New England where Faith’s family lives and Savannah, Georgia, where her friend, Sophie Maxwell, has relocated after her marriage.

While Faith is operating her catering business while raising two children and assisting her husband with his very active ministry, Sophie is learning to adjust to her new family and life in the South.

Complicating the transition for Sophie is the discovery of a body in a bedroom wardrobe that mysteriously disappears before the police can check out the scene. The house, on loan from her new relatives, may or may not have a supernatural history; thus, the locals tend to dismiss the newcomer’s “discovery” as a figment of her imagination, but Sophie knows better.

Mimicking the slow pace of life in Georgia’s Low Country, there is so much going on in both Sophie and Faith’s lives that it is easy to forget the mysterious disappearing corpse, but be patient for eventually you’ll discover what is going on here.

Built around some very well developed and attractive characters, this series featuring Faith and her family and friends has attracted many readers because they are comfortable with this amateur sleuth’s investigative style and her caring personality.

It may appear that there sometimes isn’t much happening on the “mystery side” of the plot as secondary issues dominate the story. For example, in this instance Faith’s daughter is dealing with school bullying and her husband is considering a move while Sophie must deal with a former flame of her new husband and the fact that her sister -in-law isn’t a very pleasant person.

Normally these would be distractions that lessen the overall impact of the suspense element, but, in this instance, it isn’t that much of a distraction.

Also, Page does keep subtly building the mystery strain so that when she does kick it into high gear the reader will see that the pieces are finally falling into place.

An added bonus of this particular adventure is that the author has loaded it with plenty of local color and historical lore about Savannah. And, of course, you’ll find some of Faith’s favorite recipes at the back of the book too!

Book Blurb for The Body in the Wardrobe

Minster’s wife, caterer, and part-time sleuth Faith Fairchild pairs up with Sophie Maxwell, last seen in Body in the Birches and now a newlywed living in historic Savannah, Georgia, where Sophie crosses paths with murder. Another delightful entry in the beloved mystery series, complete with delectable recipes.

Attorney Sophie Maxwell has come to Savannah to be with her new husband, Will. But nothing throws cold water on a hot relationship faster than a dead body. Worse for Sophie, no one believes the body she knows she saw is real. Will is spending an awful lot of time in Atlanta on a case he claims is urgent, and she’s been tasked with house hunting for them with his former sweetheart, who Sophie can’t help but suspect wishes Sophie would return to her Yankee roots!

Fortunately, Sophie has a good friend in Faith Fairchild. With teenage Amy being bullied by mean girls and husband Tom contemplating a major life change that will affect all the Fairchilds, Faith is eager for distraction in the form of some sleuthing. In between discussions of newlywed agita, surprising Savannah customs and, of course, fabulous low country food, Faith and Sophie will pair up to unmask a killer!
