His Majesty's Hope

A Maggie Hope Mystery

Maggie Hope has already proven herself with assignments in war-torn England and now the young spy is given an assignment that will take her into the heart of the Third Reich. More to the point, Maggie will finally meet the woman who deserted her as a child, went to Germany, and now socializes with the country’s most important leaders.

For Maggie, the assignment is a bittersweet one for she finally comes face to face with her mother, discovers she has a stepsister , is reunited with a former lover she thought was lost in combat and, finally, is forced to kill to protect her cover.

Susan Elia MacHeal takes the Maggie Hope series to the next level as the young American, who began in a secretarial position with Winston Churchill, is forced to confront the nastier side of being an special operations agent. When Maggie considers calling it quits at the conclusion of this dangerous and nearly fatal assignment, her handler puts everything into clear perspective.

“You can’t quit, Maggie. You’re a spook now. You’re part of a family. When you first started with Churchill you were certainly smart, but unfocused, a bit unformed. Frankly, I didn’t know if you had what it takes to work in Intelligence – whether you had the skills, the cunning to survive. But the way you handled yourself in Berlin shows us that you’re the whole package now. Look at yourself. You’re strong, capable, and yes, even ruthless. You should be proud of how far you’ve come.”

Unfortunately, Maggie doesn’t take pride in her recent accomplishments. In fact, she’s rather upset that she has “set aside her moral compass” and totally exhausted from the physical and emotional ordeal she has just undergone.

Does this mean the series is over? Hardly! There’s another story “The Prime Minister’s Secret Agent”) already scheduled for publication, but one has to wonder what the more mature and perhaps rather cynical Maggie Hope will be like. Will she be as beguiling and attractive a personality as the young woman we have followed in the first three adventures in the series? Let’s hope so!
