Welcome back to Fool's Gold! In Susan Mallery's latest visit to America's most beautiful town, Jack McGary and his personal assistant Larissa Owens make a great team. Larissa keeps Jack's life and duties at Score running smoothly and Jack provides Larissa with the financial means to fund her never ending rescue projects.
I will admit that I was a little disappointed in Jack and Larissa's story. I read the excerpt to this novel at the end of When We Met and had high hopes for a great love story, especially with the bombshell Larissa’s mom dropped on Jack.
Larissa seemed to be on a one woman mission to save the entire animal population of California with Jack happily coasting along making donations and mostly unwillingly providing storage space for the rescue animals until permanent homes can be found.
I was very underwhelmed with Jack's lackluster response to Larissa' s profession of love halfway through the book and the off the wall idea they concocted to make her fall out of love with him and get on with her life. Of course the idea crashed and burned with the fallout hurting more people than intended. I just felt that the timeframe between Jack's "a-ha" moment of “she’s the one I can’t live without” and the end of the book was a little rushed. I will say this, his apology to Taryn and acceptance of her offer of being a 'bridesman' was pretty stinking' hilarious!
Susan Mallery knows how to expertly weave a tale full of characters and vibrant scenery while doing great justice to the main story. There's always a good plot flow and the continuing introduction of new characters to potentially further the series. I just wasn’t lovin’ this installment.
