This fifth book in the Tallgrass series really puts more icing on the cake. In this latest novel we have Benita Ford and Captain Calvin Sweet from Tallgrass Oklahoma. This is a story that will stick with readers long after the novel ends.
A Chance of a Lifetime takes the reader into the circle of three childhood friends, two boys and a girl. But after growing up we find that only two of the third friends have remained friends. Readers will wonder what happened to break the relationship between Calvin, J'Myel and Benita aka Bennie. As childhood friends they were known as The Three Musketeers. Bennie and J’Myel marry and then he passes.
The passing of a friend can have momentous emotional and physical impacts and in this case we have Bennie and Calvin coming back together.
Calvin has returned from Afghanistan suffering with PTSD. Bennie and Calvin come back together again after many years have passed. I loved how this author was able to bring into this storyline not only the two main characters but another group of characters. This was simply off the chart. They are all so well developed, defined, and portrayed. It was all so believable.
Here are just a few wonderful cast characters.....
The Sweets Family, Pickerings Family, Ms. Emmeline, Diez, Joe Cadore, Lucy [Luce], Trinity Adams, Ilena Gomez, John, Tuesday Night Margarita Club members....Carly Clark, Jessy, Fia, Marti, Patricia, and Leach Therese. That’s just a small portion of the characters that are easily woven into the threads of this story. They don’t take away from the main characters, they support them. Many of these people will have their own stories. The Margarita Club members are all friends and widows...who had lost a husband in war. In particular I loved this group of ladies!
I found this novel to be very well written. The main question is will Calvin and Bennie take the ultimate risk for the love of a lifetime. Bennie learns the whole story of just what had happened between Calvin and J'Myel. Will that hinder the progress toward an HEA? I don't want to spoil any of it other than to say you will have to pick up this novel. A Chance of a Lifetime will keep your attention all the way to the end. I highly recommend this series and story.
Sometimes love finds you when you least expect it . . .
To Benita Ford, Tallgrass, Oklahoma, will always be home. It's where her beloved grandmother raised her and where she rode bikes with her two best friends-the man who became her husband and Calvin. And Tallgrass is where she stayed, even after her husband died while serving his country. Now Calvin is home from that same war, and the sensitive, mischievous boy she once knew is today a man scarred by wounds no one else can see. Falling in love with him is something Bennie never imagined.
Tallgrass still haunts Captain Calvin Sweet. Yet it's where he must go to see Bennie-the one woman he always loved but could never have. Calvin regrets so much about what happened years ago. Still he can't deny being with Bennie makes his future feel bright, like anything is possible. But the demons of his past won't be quieted that easily. As old hurts linger, threatening to pull them apart, Calvin and Bennie must take the ultimate risk for the love of a lifetime . . .
