This is the second story in the “A Scandalous Scots Novel” series by Sue-Ellen Welfonder. It has some major problems. The story takes forever to get the romance between the hero and heroine started. There is also a writing flow problem; it barely moves along.
First, I had to read over two-hundred plus pages before the hero, Roag, and heroine, Lady Gillian, kiss for the second time! The first two-hundred pages are filled with background information about how Lady Gillian came to the island and how Roag got the assignment to come to Laddies’s Isle off the coast of Scotland. The book also gives you information on the life that Roag led as a “Fenris Guard” in the King of Scotland’s secret army and his life as boy at a royal court whose parents didn’t claim him. This leads to the mystery part of the story that is concluded at the end of the story.
Last, the writing flows slowly from beginning till the half-way point where the hero and heroine kiss for the second time; even during the action scenes it flows slowly. However, the writing flow picks up a little speed during the last few chapters and it keeps that way until the end.
Can Lady Gillian get away from her hand fasted husband and the island she was sent to by her family? Read on to find this out and also learn more about a boggle, ghost, and others also on the island.
AN UNWILLING BRIDE
Proud, passionate Lady Gillian MacGuire is known as the Spitfire of the Isles. She can take care of herself and hasn't yet met a man who could impress her . . . especially not Donell MacDonnell, the odious older man she was promised to five years ago. She's been dreading his return, but when her intended comes back to claim her, she's stunned at how different he seems. The man she swore she would spurn forever now invades her thoughts, her dreams, and her heart.
AN UNEXPECTED DESIRE
When Roag agrees to assume the identity of the recently deceased MacDonnell chieftain, no one warns him that the man was betrothed. As a member of the King's Fenris Guard, he is oath-bound to embark on whatever mission the crown gives him. Of course, he was expecting a battle-not a bride. Yet after sharing one kiss with Lady Gillian, the powerful Highlander becomes the one seduced and captivated. Now giving in to temptation could ruin them both . . .
