The Golden City

A Novel of the Golden City, #1

The author grabbed my attention from the beginning of this book due to the dark, gritty background she created for her world. However, it has a major flaw that I could not overlook because it made the book so hard to follow that I was unable to finish it. I got confused about what genre this book should fall in while I was reading it due to several splits in genres that started to appear in the second chapter of the book and which got progressively worse as I continued to read it. This tale is posted under the Fantasy genre because of it having some fantasy elements to it: an alternative world where magic is used, mythical beings (including shape shifters, sereia, and the mention of otter people.) On the other hand, as you keep reading through the tale you come to a mystery that puts it into the mystery genre; yet in other parts of the book it reads like a romance novel. All of this genre-jumping had me throwing the book against the wall and walking away from it!

The heroine of this tale, Oriana, is so fearless that even when her status-conscious human employer throws her out on the street with no money or clothing she still is able to walk around with her head held high! However, Oriana knows she must follow the orders of her menacing spymaster and find another job soon or he will force her to return home dishonored. Who can she ask for help when she doesn’t have any money???

Special Notes:

*This is NOT a stand alone. The author gave us an “Open Ending” that left a question at the end of this book: Will Oriana come back to Duilio, the hero of this tale, and have a life with him?
