One Foot in the Grove

An Olive Grove Mystery, #1

Plot: Can Eva figure out why someone killed the fishing and hunting guided at her family plantation before she is thrown into jail for the murder?

Author Kelly Lane has created a cozy mystery that drew my attention at first chapter and kept it for a few chapters into it. However, I got tired of the over the top stock characters that filled this story and the author's overuse of describing everything around the heroine, Eva, of this story. Eva along with her family own a Southern plantation that grows olives.

One of the stock characters is Eva's older sister, Daphne, who portrays a Southern Belle with her nose stuck in the air. She looks down on people who don’t use proper etiquette. In addition, the author portrayed Italian men as New York gangsters’ who wear gold chains and can only think of ways to “whack” people who get in their way. Their wives are portrayed even worse: they are big hair, small brain bimbos who wear eyelash extension so big that when one of the staff finds one in the bathtub she thinks it’s a drowned rat!

Next, this cozy mystery is big (342 pages with recipes) because the author describes every item from the clothing the heroine is wearing to the scenery around her at any given time. We also get oodles of information on what type of food that is being created by the cook at the family plantation.

Last, all of the above and more led me to put the book down for several days to take a break from it every so often and come back to it at a later date until I finished it. Yet, I did not notice any grammar errors or other problems such as slow pacing that could have screwed up this story. It's overall just too descriptive.

Book Blurb for One Foot in the Grove

First in a delicious new mystery series about Eva Knox and her family’s Georgia olive plantation.

In the sweet Southern town of Abundance, Georgia, home of the Knox family’s olive farm, gossip isn’t the only thing that can kill you...

After leaving a man at the altar for the second time in her life, Eva Knox decides to head home to her family’s plantation to regroup and soak in some Southern charm. But hiding from her woes is a slipperier proposition than Eva imagined. For one thing, most people in town still haven’t forgiven her for leaving local boy Buck Tanner at the altar and hightailing it up north eighteen years ago. For another, a death on her family’s farm soon makes her the lead suspect in a murder case—and the sheriff investigating is none other than Eva’s old flame Buck.

With the police putting the squeeze on her, it’s up to Eva and her sisters, Pep and Daphne, to figure out who could have possibly left a dead body in their olive grove. And they’ll have to catch the greasy killer quickly—because it looks like Eva has been picked as the murderer’s next victim...
