The Wire in the Butter

I've always hated state fairs. This story only helps to reaffirms that hatred. A homosexual couple goes to the state fair only to find a dead body while going to see the blue ribbon animals. This is a mystery comedy story. While the mystery part is fairly predictable the twist at the end saves it from being boring.

The comedy makes this story worth reading. It's has a few moments that had me laughing out loud. The short but sweet interaction between the homosexual couple is a satisfying one. The couple reminded me of my parents and it was nice to see such realistic characters in a short story.

Book Blurb for The Wire in the Butter

The scent of cotton candy, kettle corn, deep-fried cheese curds and pronto pups fill the air at the end of summer. The Minnesota State Fair has started and, slice by slice, a chuck of butter reveals a woman's head; a bust of Princess Kay of the Milky Way. This year the sculptor is knocked out, the model is strangled with wire and the smiling butter sculpture helps guide Dan Niemi and Jeff Andersen to the killer's identity. A short story from our Fingerprints mystery/crime/thriller line.
