The Keeper

Mist, #1

It's always refreshing to get away from the norm. No vampires, no werewolves, no zombies, no sirens, and no ghosts. It's an odd thing to find a young adult book let alone a paranormal young adult book with none of these things. So that worked in favor of this book from the get go. I love books that try something new and go against what's usually out there at the time.

I like Billie the heroine of the story a lot. The author, Natalie Star, did something very interesting when she made Billie the popular girl. Lot of young adult books make their heroines be the outcast or the every girl. So it was nice to see a change in that setting. Even though I've never been one of the popular kids I found myself to still be able to relate to Billie, and understand what she was going through for the most part.

The plot of the book was thrilling and unique. I could never tell what turn the book was going to take next. I did make some predictions along the way and surprisingly I found myself to be right only twenty-five percent of the time. It went to show how different the plot was. The characters besides Billie were all able to evoke such strong emotion. I either grew to truly love them or despise them. That was even true for little background characters.

This book was such a nice change of pace. I do wish the pacing of the book had been slower, and that all the info in the book was more spread out. It's a great read and I recommend it to all readers who like young adult books.
