When magic is exposed to all, people react in the typical manner of fear and loathing anything they don't understand. Quickly they revert back to the tendencies of the Salem witch hunts, making any who exhibit any magical power, real or imagined, vulnerable.
Shea Jameson has lived in fear since her aunt was accused of being a witch and was burned at the steak. When she accidentally sets a man on fire, she is horrified how quickly her life collapses around her. There is no chance for explanations. Soon she is on the run from the Magic Police. But then a strange man enters her life.
Torin claims to be her Eternal mate. He tells her he can keep her safe, that she is entering her Awakening. Shea doesn't know if she can trust this stranger, who insists that they have a quest to complete. She hopes that she will soon remember all that is locked in her memories. But will it be soon enough?
Being the first book of a new series there was a lot of world building and set up going on for the continuing series, which was a bit distracting, but soon blended into a story I was caught up in. Shea suffered from a lack of common sense in a few parts that I found irritating, but she snapped out of it quickly. I could understand her apprehension in trusting Torin and why she took the actions she did.
Torin was a bit of a dumb ass early on in the book, but thankfully he learned that he couldn't approach Shea in such a demanding and assuming manner. I know that is typical romance hero characteristics, it was a little of over the top, but fortunately he evened it out, and realized that Shea had a brain.
The chemistry between Shea and Torin was very steamy. Their passion and desire kept the pages heated up both in and out of bed. I liked how everything played out, and look forward to reading more about the Awakening witches. I hope that Kellyn is taken care of and I look forward to Rune coping with his own Eternal and their quest. He was a great addition to the storyline.
In the ten years since magic has reemerged in the world, witches have become feared and hunted. For weeks Shea Jameson has been haunted by visions of fire. When she unintentionally performs a spell in public, she becomes one of the hunted. Her only hope is Torin, a dangerously sensual man who claims to be her eternal mate.
