Spellbent

Spellbent Series #1

Talk about a good spell gone bad. Apprentice sorceress Jessie Shimmer and her teacher/lover Cooper Marron were just trying to call down a simple rain-spell, instead a portal into hell is open, sucking Cooper in and spitting out a viscous demon. Leaving Jessie to fight the monster, close the portal, and find Cooper. But there's a few little hindrances, first Jessie loses an eye and hand in the battle, then the governing circle decides that Jessie is an outlaw, cutting off all of her resources, and not allowing anyone to help her.

She and her familiar Pal must find a way to save Cooper, but can they reach him in time?

*****

Lucy A. Snyder did a phenomenal job creating an alternate world with fascinating characters and a fast-action, edgy plot. There was nothing predictable about the riveting tale. I loved the dark, gritty feel of Jessie, she did what was right, no matter how hard it was. She knew the choices she had made wouldn't lead to sunshine and lollipops, but could very well get her killed, and she still stuck with her morals and integrity. She was severely wounded and there was no magic recovery for her, I liked that she had to learn to adapt to her injuries, and not just wave her hand and they were all better. I also loved Jessie's sarcastic and rather twisted sense of humor, there were a more than a few times that I caught myself laughing out loud. But to counter-balance that, my stomach churned with unease as Jessie fought the demons and the governing circle.

This is definitely one for the keeper shelves. I can't wait for October 's release of SHOTGUN SORCERESS so that I can continue on the journey of self-discovery with Jessie as she learns to control her new-found powers, and rids the world of the nasty baddies. I also can't wait to see more of Pal, Mother Karen, Cooper, The Warlock and even Kai. I look forward to seeing how Jessie and Cooper work together, to see if there is a power-struggle, if one is stronger than the other or what. Cooper was her teacher, can he still teach her, or has Jessie's powers surpassed his?
