Six years ago, Haley King testified in a high-profile case, forcing her to enter the witness protection program, taking her away from her husband and sons. Greg and his sons coped with her disappearance by focusing on their bounty hunting business.
An ominous situation brings Haley back home to the only man who can help her. Their forced separation has not diminished their feelings for one another, yet now they need to reacquaint themselves with each other, because while some things stay the same, there will always be the inevitable changes. Can they handle the modifications their personalities have taken? Or will it draw them further apart?
I was really excited to start PLAY DIRTY, the man of the cover is gorgeous, the description sounded promising, but not long after I began turning the pages I realized that this wasn't going to work for me. Greg and Haley were missing the crucial chemistry needed to make them work as a couple. Greg was very condescending to Haley, it seems as if he was just pacifying her to make her shut up and feel good about herself, while he was making his own plans. Also, I can't believe her sons Marc and Jake didn't feel a little resentment for her choices, instead they just welcomed her with open-arms. It didn't help that I found Haley obnoxious either.
Most situations and actions were over-explained and over-the-top, which drives me crazy. But what really pushed me over the edge was when the story became rather discombobulated and previous facts were mixed up such as how Haley seems to have no clue who 'the Bird' is, then a bit later she mentions that John worked a case for 'the Bird'. NOBODY blinks and eye or even acknowledges this, and soon we were back to wondering what John's connection was to this...um, huh? Didn't we just establish that? Another time was while Greg was in the hospital. He was unconscious, and probably doped-up on painkillers, then on the next few pages (no time elapsed between this) Greg knows what all went on because he saw bits on CNN and put it all together. WHAT?!?!?!
Even though I wasn't thrilled with this story, I am willing to give Ms. O'Clare a second chance (this was the first book of her's I've read). I really do want to read Marc & Jake's stories, and hope they work better for me.
