Never Trust a Scoundrel

Son's of Scandal #1

Grace Banbury's mother has done the unthinkable by offering her daughter's hand in marriage in a high-stakes poker game, and losing. Now Grace has the inconceivable task of telling her brother of what their mother has done, because she not only gave Grace away, she has also lost an antique violin and both their country and town homes, taking away his inheritance.

Daniel Throckmorten had no desire to marry, but he does desire Grace. He sees a challenge in her that he cannot resist. They make a wager, if she can resist his advances for two weeks, she can have the valuable violin, if not, she becomes his mistress.

Daniel's many attempts to seduce Grace, are hot and extremely sexy, though she is smart enough to resist him. Grace knows that he is a gentleman, who will not do anything that she does not consent to, no matter how far to the edge she pushes him. They are both extremely likable characters with an extraordinary chemistry between them, the sexual tension between these two keeps the pages sizzling. Daniel and Grace each have their own agenda to pursue, and while they both endeavor to win, by fair means or foul, the other is always onto their antics, which they do not hesitate to call them on, leaving no room for a great misunderstanding.

I also enjoyed the characters of Daniel's family, especially his cousin Chris, the Duke of Madingley and Grace's brother Edward, both are protective of their family members, and while they have flaws, the are both very appealing.

While much of this story is lighthearted, both Daniel and Grace have their own ghosts they are battling, adding depth and emotion to the story. The ending of the story is so sweet and poignant that it brought me to tears.

Gayle Callen weaves a marvelous tale blending temptation and seduction, leading to a great passion. I cannot remember the last recently published book that has made me cry. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Callen, but it will not be the last, I eagerly await the next book in her "Sons of Scandal" series.
