Lucian Langdon, Earl of Claybourne, has seen the seedier side of life, spending much of his youth as a street urchin. Arrested for murder, awaiting the inevitable trip to the gallows, an old man claims he is his long lost grandson. Though tutored as a gentlemen, society still would never accept him, speculating about the allegations of his being a murderer and believing he's not the real grandson, they call him the Devil Earl.
Lady Catherine Mabry was in need of someone who could take care of an urgent and unsavory problem. She approaches Lucian, asking if he would murder someone for him. Though shocked by her request, they soon come to an agreement. He will take care of her problem, if she helps him. The woman he plans to marry will never be accepted into society, so he asks in turn if she will train his prospective bride to become a countess.
I liked Catherine's independent personality, and her unwillingness to back down from a challenge. I also liked the passion and intensity she showed for those she loved. The desire between Lucian and Catherine was all consuming. I thought they made an excellent couple.
I thought Lorraine Heath wrote a wonderful story, though I was irritated with Lucian's continued stance that he was going to marry Frannie, I could understand his feelings, but I thought it was drug out to long. I'm sure that after his feelings for Catherine intensified he could see that what he felt for Frannie was more of a sibling love.
I liked how the story ended, leaving us wondering and wanting to know where Sterling, Catherine's brother has spent the last few years, knowing that somehow he is going to fit into the Scoundrels of St. James stories. Also, knowing that Frannie too will have her own story. I was intrigued by all of Lucian's friends, curious as to how their books will.
They call him the Devil Earl—a scoundrel and accused murderer who grew up on the violent London streets. A proper young lady risks more than her reputation when consorting with the roguishly handsome Lucian Langdon, but Lady Catherine Mabry believes she has no choice. To protect those she loves, she would do anything—even strike a bargain with the devil himself. Lucian desires respectability and a wife above all else, but the woman of his choosing lacks the social graces to be accepted by the aristocracy. Catherine can help Lucian gain everything he wants. But what she asks for in exchange will put their very lives in jeopardy. When danger closes in, Catherine discovers a man of immense passion and he discovers a woman of immeasurable courage. As secrets from his dark past are revealed, Lucian begins to question everything he knows to be true, including the yearnings of his own heart. About the Author Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, and articles, but something was always missing. In 1990, she read a romance novel and became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her own writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since, for both adult and young adult readers. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWA's RITA®, a HOLT Medallion, a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, and several Texas Gold Awards.
