Ilona Andrews, Masters of Suspense - Dark Streets
Ilona Andrews is a husband and wife writing team. Ilona and Gordon met in college.
One of my favorite series by these two is the Kate Daniels series. It is one that is loaded with a combination of magic and suspense. For all you sci-fi lovers, this is the series for you!
Here, courtesy of their website, is a brief rundown of the Kate Daniels series:
The world has suffered through a magic apocalypse. Magic comes in waves, without warning, and can vanish as suddenly as it appears. When magic is on an upswing, planes can drop from the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells…fail.
In this volatile, screwed up universe, magic feeds on technology, monsters prowl the ruined streets, werecreatures stalk prey – and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, manipulate blood crazed vampires with their minds.
This is the world of Kate Daniels. Kate’s a gal who likes her sword (perhaps a bit TOO much) and has a hard time controlling her temper and her mouth. The magic in her blod makes her a target, and she spends most of her existence hiding in plain sight. But sometimes even the hardiest of trained killers make friends and fall in love….
The Kate Daniels series is one loaded with action and suspense, and one that fans of the paranormal suspense genre would surely enjoy.
Below is a list of titles in the series;
1. MAGIC BITES
2. MAGIC BURNS
3. MAGIC STRIKES
4. MAGIC BLEEDS
5. MAGIC SLAYS
6. MAGIC RISES
7. MAGIC BREAKS
8. MAGIC SHIFTS
They are also the authors of The Edge series, a series that neither they, their agent or editor were quite able to classify, but which all of them were mesmerized by!
The Edge is the story of a woman who is trying very hard not to become a monster and a man who thinks is already is one.
They both experience injustice and separately decide to stand up against it. Here is the official synopsis:
Charlotte de Ney is as noble as they come, a blueblood straight out of the Weird. But even though she possesses rare magical healing abilities, her life has brought her nothing but pain. After her marriage crumbles, she flees to the Edge to build a new home for herself. Until Richard Mar is brought to her for treatment, and Charlotte’s life is turned upside down once again.
Richard is a swordsman without peer, future head of his large and rambunctious Edger clan—and he’s on a clandestine quest to wipe out slavers trafficking humans in the Weird. So when his presence leads his very dangerous enemies to Charlotte, she vows to help Richard destroy them. The slavers’ operation, however, goes deeper than Richard knows, and even working together, Charlotte and Richard may not survive...
There are only four books in this series (published also by Ace) but they are worth looking into:
1. ON THE EDGE
2. BAYOU MOON
3. FATE’S EDGE
4. STEEL’S EDGE

Columnist: Toni LoTempio
While Toni Lotempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper. Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She lists among her favorite mystery/suspense writers Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson, as well as EJ Copperman, Steve Hockensmith, Victoria Laurie, Ali Brandon, Rita Mae Brown, Miranda James and Sofie Kelly to name only a few! Toni is also passionate about her love for animals, as demonstrated with her four cats: Trixie, Princess, Maxx and, of course, ROCCO, who not only provided the inspiration for the character of Nick the cat in the Nick and Nora mystery series, but who also writes his own blog and does charity work for Nathan Fillion’s charity, Kids Need to Read! Toni’s also devoted to miniseries like The Thorn Birds, Dancing with the Stars, reruns of Murder She Wrote and Castle (of course!). She (and ROCCO, albeit he’s uncredited) pen the Nick and Nora mystery series from Berkley Prime Crime – the first volume, MEOW IF ITS MURDER, debuted Dec. 2, 2014. The second book, Claws for Alarm, is now on shelves. She, Rocco and company make their home in Clifton, New Jersey, just twenty minutes from the Big Apple – New York.
