Gods & Monsters - The Melting Pot
World building is most definitely ‘my thing.’ I enjoy discussing the world’s built by my favorite authors. (Yup, I know the difference between a hippogriff and a grindylow – thank you JKR.) I even teach a class on world building and how to use it in a variety of ways for book marketing. Most of all, I love diving into a book with a lush and well written world. The two books featured this month both have rich and intriguing worlds for you to explore.
Let’s add the warm and spicy flavors of great world building to the melting pot!
I’ll be honest and say that it was the cover of this book that first caught my eye! (Isn’t it beautiful?!?) Then I dug into the story…WOW! I mean, what would you do if you were haunted by dreams that left you bruised and beaten when you woke up? How would you juggle a zombie horde, their demon leader, and a hottie guardian sworn to protect you? Did I mention that the hottie guardian is also your lover from a past life and that you are a reincarnated ancient warrior? LOL! Let me just say – Jayde Brooks can TELL a story. When you pick up this book, be ready to cinch your seat belt for a wild ride. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Eden’s evolution and adventures….plus, my understanding is that Ms. Brooks may have more books planned for these characters.
Daughter of Gods and Shadows by Jayde Brooks
Eden Reid is not interested in prophesy. The problem is that a doozy of a prophesy is bearing down on her. Such is the case when you're a twenty-four-year-old from Brooklyn, New York who is about to discover she is an ancient god. A truly powerful one. And with power comes problems.
A truly formidable demon is gunning for her; a zombie-like pandemic is spreading across the country, creating creatures who are hungry for flesh, fast on their feet and clever; and there is the mysterious, handsome stranger with powers of his own who claims to have been her lover from a time and a life that Eden cannot remember. He promises to help awaken her powers for the upcoming war. A war where there is only one prize: survival…in Daughter of Gods and Shadows from debut author Jayde Brooks.
In a world where legal contracts are bound by craft, skilled practitioners trained in The Hidden Schools are needed to assist with negotiations. Nothing good happens when a god dies…and it is up to Tara Abernathy to sort out the contracts and commitments that overtaxed Kos’ not-so-eternal flame. Max Gladstone created a world where lawyers are wizards and witches; gods are a mix of deity and machine with priests who act as engineers; and justice comes in the form of black cloaked beings temporarily ‘hosted’ by humans. Throw in vampires and stone men (aka living gargoyles) and stir to create a brightly woven, mashed-up tapestry of a world filled with magic and intrigue.
Three Parts Dead (Craft Sequence Book 1) by Max Gladstone
A god has died, and it’s up to Tara, first-year associate in the international necromantic firm of Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao, to bring Him back to life before His city falls apart.
Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without Him, the metropolis’s steam generators will shut down, its trains will cease running, and its four million citizens will riot.
Tara’s job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the dead god, who’s having an understandable crisis of faith.
When Tara and Abelard discover that Kos was murdered, they have to make a case in Alt Coulumb’s courts—and their quest for the truth endangers their partnership, their lives, and Alt Coulumb’s slim hope of survival.
Set in a phenomenally built world in which justice is a collective force bestowed on a few, craftsmen fly on lightning bolts, and gargoyles can rule cities, MAX GLADSTONE’s Three Parts Dead introduces readers to an ethical landscape in which the line between right and wrong blurs.

I have a confession to make. I’m a time traveler. I love flinging myself into the future, then hurtling fast to an alternative past. In my usual time-space-dimension, I’m a mechanical engineer and business woman. So, I have a natural penchant for hover cars and steam or aether powered engines. Though I was born in the wrong era, I’m actually a child of the sixties – 1860, 1960, 2060.
My stories feature strong women, who know how to wield their minds like weapons. Their men are smart and often controlling….but, rest assured, my female leads give them a run for their money. They strive to follow their hearts and dreams for the betterment of themselves and their loved ones. Like my life, all of my stories feature a diverse cast of characters.
With my business partner, Therese Patrick, I work to demystify marketing principles for my author friends. Our first book, Author Marketing 101 Guide & Journal, was published by Gazebo Gardens Publishing and released in October 2013.
Steampunk, futurist, blerd, artist, author, and marketing maven…a real creative force of nature – that’s me in a nutshell.
