A Spot of Suspense…With Ann Purser! - Dark Streets
Another talented suspense author I’ve discovered recently is author Ann Purser. Ann is the author of the Lois Meade and Ivy Beasley mysteries!
Ann started writing after her small daughter was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. At eight years old she went away to school, and Ann missed her so much she decided to put her feelings into writing. She did, and it appeared in SHE magazine. Ann took on the role of television reviewing for the Stage and Television today section which she describes as “A wonderful experience, and I was threatened with a lawsuit only once.” :)
Six years later, she decided to broaden her horizons and did a wonderful degree with the Open University. Thinking she’d try her hand at a novel, she wrote the six Round Ringford village stories, followed by two detective series: starring Lois Meade, detective in one, and Ivy Beasley, head of an enquiry agency in the other. Lois runs a cleaning business, and recognizes the ideal environment for detecting: a position of trust in her clients` houses. Lois is married and has a hands off relationship with Inspector Cowgill; and Ivy is engaged to be married to Roy, both resident in an old folks home in Suffolk.
Anne loves writing both series!
New Brooms, We Sweep Cleaner! Is Lois’ motto, though not everyone knows that in reluctant association with her loyal admirer, Inspector Hunter Cowgill, she aims to sweep crime away along with dust from her locality!
Lois forbids gossip amongst her team, but should any of them spot any suspicious goings-on in the houses they clean, then it’s their duty to report it to their boss. It is, after all, quite usual for a beady-eyed cleaner to take a glance at correspondence and confidential papers left lying around…and telephone conversations are always worth a surreptitious listen…..
Here’s a teaser of the latest Lois Meade mystery, Scandal at Six:
Spring has arrived in Long Farnden and with it, a mysterious infestation. Lois Meade’s daughter has found her village store overrun by insects and reptiles. And Lois has no time to stop and smell the roses, if she’s to stay one step ahead of the creepy crawlies.
As Lois looks into the invasion, she becomes embroiled in yet another “ferretin’ case,” as her husband would say. Her investigation leads her to Robert Pettinson, a seemingly unhinged zookeeper, and his nephew. The two of them are knee-deep in illegal trade, and they don’t take kindly to Lois poking her nose into their business.
Lois enlists the help of her faithful cleaner Dot Nimmo and police inspector Hunter Cowgill to discover more about Pettinson and a suspicious death at the zoo. And death is in store for more people, if Lois doesn’t put the killer behind bars soon…
The Ivy Beasley mysteries feature Ivy Beasley from the Round Ringford stories. She’s moved to an old folks’ residence in Barrington, a small village in Suffolk. Autocratic as ever, she is busily shaping the place up to her standards when Augustus Halfhide, tall, thin and oddly attractive moves into Hangman’s Row in the village. He’s a mystery in himself, and when he offers to see Ivy home from church one Sunday, it’s the beginning of an unlikely relationship.
Alongside Ivy, Augustus (now called Gus) recruits her much younger cousin Deirde and Ivy’s admirer, Roy Goodman, and sets up a detective agency called “Enquire Within”. Almost immediately, they land their first case: an old woman known for her sharp tongue and persecution of her daughter is found dead on the floor of her cottage….
Here’s a teaser of the latest Ivy Beasley mystery, the Sleeping Salesman Enquiry:
Save the date: Ivy Elizabeth Beasley is ready to share her golden years and plans to wed Roy Vivian Goodman on the fifth of May. A spinster no more, the private eye is in for marriage, murder, and mishaps galore…
It’s the talk of Ivy Beasley's retirement community—her fiancé, Roy, has quite the hefty inheritance. She couldn’t care less about his fortune, but it has a way of luring long-lost relatives out of the woodwork. And when, against Ivy’s wishes, Roy asks his dubious nephew, furniture salesman Steven Wright, to be the best man, she cannot help but disapprove. After all, she suspects he’s out for his uncle’s fortune…
But after the banns of Ivy and Roy’s marriage are announced at the Barrington village church and an anonymous voice shouts out a protest, the wedding may be off. And with the discovery of a body in a bed in a nearby furniture shop, Ivy and her team of sleuths at Enquire Within may be closer to a dangerous reception than they realize.
Both series are well plotted and suspenseful. I have enjoyed reading them and I think you will as well.
