Sue Grafton - S is for Success! - Dark Streets
Sue Grafton is a well known suspense author and is known for her 'alphabet series'. The series started back in 1982. Sue started writing when she was eighteen. Her first novel took her four years.
The alphabet series starts out with the letter A. "A" Is for Alibi is set in the city of Santa Teresa, CA and the focus is on private investigator Kinsey Millhone. Kinsey is the daughter of C. W. Grafton. C. W. Grafton is a detective writer. The second book is titled "B" is for Burglar and is followed up with "C" is for Corpse.
Sue's career didn't take off quickly. She produced seven novels and only sold two. At that time she started to focus more on screenplays, including Sex and the Single Parent, Mark, I Love You, and Nurse. Years later Sue started focusing again on her fiction career after going through a brutal divorce. She imagined many ways to off her ex and those imaginings helped her get started on some new suspense novels.
Fun Fact: Sue has refused to sell her film rights. The reason being that she worked for Hollywood and no longer desires the connection. Even her children have been told not to sell the rights or they will be haunted.
Sue's main character, Kinsey Millhone, is complex and she has many ex's. She also has a family rift.
Sue is still working on her alphebet series with the latest (2013) being "W" is for Wasted.
The last novel in the series looks to be titled "Z" is for Zero.
Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I’d never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue.
The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He’d been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He’d been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone’s name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him.
Two seemingly unrelated deaths, one a murder, the other apparently of natural causes.
But as Kinsey digs deeper into the mystery of the John Doe, some very strange linkages begin to emerge. And before long at least one aspect is solved as Kinsey literally finds the key to his identity. “And just like that,” she says, “the lid to Pandora’s box flew open. It would take me another day before I understood how many imps had been freed, but for the moment, I was inordinately pleased with myself.”
In this multilayered tale, the surfaces seem clear, but the underpinnings are full of betrayals, misunderstandings, and outright murderous fraud. And Kinsey, through no fault of her own, is thoroughly compromised.
W is for . . . wanderer . . . worthless . . . wronged . . .
W is for wasted.
I was hooked from the very first moment I started reading these books. I absolutely adore Kinsey and the world Sue Grafton has created, and while I look forward to each installment, I can’t help noticing that we are nearing the end of the alphabet….will that mean the end of Kinsey’s adventures??????? We shall have to see.
If you haven’t yet picked up one of these books, do so today! You will not be disappointed!
