Current Release: Wildflowers from Winter
Describe your current release in two sentences?
Up-and-coming architect, Bethany Quinn was happy to leave her small town ten years ago, but when tragedies strike at home, she's forced to return and face the pain of her childhood. Out of options, Bethany tries to find a place where love and faith make sense again.
Please describe your writing environment.
Having a very active three year old at home makes it interesting, that's for sure. I quit my day job last year and I naively thought I'd have all this extra writing time. Yeah, not so much. I try to steal writing time in the wee hours of the morning or the wee hours of the night, when my crazy kid is sleeping. He also goes to preschool three days a week for a couple hours, so I try to utilize those hours well!
What are you working on?
I'm working on Wishing on Willows, which releases March 19, 2013 and is a sequel of sorts for Wildflowers from Winter. It's about a widowed mother who is trying to save her struggling cafe. But a handsome man comes to town with plans to buy her out and throws her life into chaos.
What was your childhood ambition?
I had a million. I wanted to be a zoologist, a cartoonist for Disney, a lawyer, a photo journalist, a marine biologist (thanks to Shark Week on the Discovery Channel), and a child psychologist.
Throughout all those aspirations, only one remained constant. Ever since my third grade teacher read my story about Mr. and Mrs. Leaf out loud to the class, I dreamed of writing and sharing stories with others.
What is your favorite TV show?
Vampire Diaries. I know. This might sound weird to some of you. But it is such a good show. The romance is wonderful (who doesn't love a good love triangle?), but more than that, the writers have mastered the satisfy-then-hook combination. Where most shows drag out certain story lines to the point of frustration, the writers of Vampire Diaries give the audience exactly what they're dying for, then hook us all over again with some unpredictable, but completely believable plot twist.
Where do you want to travel?
Everywhere. Seriously. Sadly, I haven't been to many places. Mexico, some places in the Unites States, and Kenya. I would love to backpack through Europe. I'd especially love to visit Ireland. And I wouldn't say no to a trip to Costa Rica.
What are your plans for the summer? Any books you are looking forward to?
We have a very busy summer ahead of us. It will be a summer filled with adoption stuff (my husband and I are in the process of adopting from the Congo), post book release stuff, and on top of that, my husband is donating his kidney to his kid brother on July 4th. Happy Independence Day! So I'll be nursing him back to health and of course, writing my next book.
Do you have a favorite time of the day? If so when and why
The morning. I absolutely love the stillness. I absolutely love how fresh and new God's mercies feel. I love going on a walk with my dog, spending some time soaking in God's Word, then sitting down at my computer with nothing but a hot tea and my thoughts.
What is the one thing you do not want to live without?
Chocolate. I would die. (Not to get melodramatic or anything)
What is the best thing about being an author?
There are too many awesome things to count! Getting paid to tell stories. That is pretty darn cool. It's not like I'm rolling in the dough or anything, but just the fact that I get compensated for doing something I would do for free is pretty cool.
And then there's all of you! All these amazing, wonderful, fantastic people I get to meet because of this journey I'm on. I've made lifelong friends through this adventure.
If you could live in a world created by an author, which book / world would you jump into?
Harry Potter! Tell me that wouldn't be cool! JK Rowling created such a living, breathing world. Reading those books felt magical. I would love to visit Hogwarts and The Burrow and the Ministry of Magic and every other amazing place tucked away in those seven books.
