Current Release: The Grove
Describe your current release in two sentences?
THE GROVE follows the Katani Priestess Saleria as she tries to manage a sacred but magically mangled garden, and the efforts of the Darkhanan Witch Aradin Teral as this young man and his deceased spirit-Guide try to convince her to come help an enemy nation resurrect the ancient Convocation of Gods and Man. It's the second release in my new eight book Guardians of Destiny series, filled with adventure, action, romance, passion, humor and plot galore, with plenty of things to delight readers both old and new to this universe.
What are you working on?
At the moment, finishing up the fourth and final book in my military science fiction series, Theirs Not To Reason Why: DAMNATION, plus working on the fourth in my Guardians of Destiny series, THE TEMPLE, and starting the first story in my new high fantasy ebook series, DAWN OF THE FLAME SEA.
Getting a book to market often takes a village. Who has helped you on the way?
My parents, for supporting me for years; my friends in Romania, for reassuring me that first romance novel was good enough to submit; my beta-editing team, which has shifted over the years but all of whom are supportive yet firm in pointing out the things that could stand to be corrected, my editor for absolute sure for believing in me; and all the background staff you never actually see unless you work at a major publishing house. (I once figured my manuscripts get looked over by anywhere from 10-12 people on average, and that's just the ones checking it for errors!)
Do you have a favorite or interesting reader meet moment?
I was at Worldcon in San Antonio this last summer, and the moderator for the panel on paranormal/fantasy romance mentioned she hadn't read any of my fantasy romances, just my military science fiction--though she admitted she did like the latter, and was interested in reading one of the former. Since I had brought a couple of books to give away at the end of the panel, and was seated next to her, I slid her way the first romance in my new Guardians of Destiny series, THE TOWER...and she kinda snatched it close and tucked it into her bag mid-speech, without breaking stride. That little snatch-and-stow still makes me giggle, thinking about it.
What is your favorite way to procrastinate?
Either playing World of Warcrack, or taking a hot bubble bath. (I have yet to figure out how to combine the two safely, without winning the lottery and building a suitably over-the-top master bath.)
My next book will be THE GUILD, third in the fantasy romance Guardians of Destiny series, and it is scheduled to be released the first Tuesday in May 2014. I've been giving away the occasional free copy of books on my "Fans of Author Jean Johnson" Facebook page, if anyone wants to come...and anyone in the Chattanooga, TN area the last full weekend in January can come see me at Chattacon!
