Interview

Hello Ashlynn,

Thanks for joining me today on Night Owl Romance.

Tammie King of NOR: To get us started can you please start by telling us a little about what you are working on or have coming out? Ashlynn Pearce: My first book, ROUGH EDGES, is coming out April 28th from Ellora's Cave. It's an emotional, erotic contemporary. This book poured out of me and I had so much fun writing it. Jake Korte is emotionally broken. Angry. Hurt. Worthless. Fearing that he will become the abuser his father was, the last thing he needs is a woman in his life. He feels like a virtual time bomb just waiting for the internal explosion. So when tiny Rebecca Saylor "chats" her way into his life and then crawls under his skin, panic descends. He can't seem to stay away, but is terrified to be with her. After surviving an abusive marriage, Becca isn't looking for love, only safety. But through her research for her column "Chat Addiction", she meets Jake who is anything but safe. He's the one man who can make her feel alive again. But can she overcome her own fears to claw her way into the heart of a man so fractured?

Tammie King of NOR: Could you please tell us a little about yourself? Ashlynn Pearce: I'm a wife, mother of two teenagers, graphics business owner, work as a secretary during the day, serve as vice-president for my local chapter and.write romance. Needless to say, I wear a lot of hats. But that's the boring stuff. You want to know what makes me tick? Immersing myself in characters. Getting down and dirty with them. Finding all the grit that makes them so fascinating.because let's be honest, it's the grit that makes us come back for more. There is nothing better than losing myself in my stories.

Tammie King of NOR: If you could be one of the characters from this book - Who would you be? And why? Ashlynn Pearce: Becca, the heroine. Because even though she's little, she is strong. Strong enough to stand up to her man and tell him he's full of shit. Every woman should be that strong.

Tammie King of NOR: Who or what influenced you when you wrote this book? Did you have a CD, Songs, environment, etc? Ashlynn Pearce: I write with metal music playing and Jake required that heavy feel. Not so much the words, but that heavy thump, thump. I'll admit too, that a lot of his feelings came from my heart. Some parts of the story were hard to write only because I had to tap into some heavy feelings. But I also think that's why this book is so emotional.

Tammie King of NOR: Can you please give us a sneak peek into the book? Ashlynn Pearce: She didn't know where she found the courage because she was never this forward. Maybe it was because she knew he wouldn't make a move or maybe it was because she knew she would never see him again after tonight. Or maybe it was because, God, she wanted to touch him. Her heart thudded in her chest as her fingertips brushed over his shoulders, amazed at the thickness and lines of muscle she could feel through his t-shirt. The air thickened with tension and his stare never left her face, but he didn't stop her. Swallowing hard, she reached up with one hand and her thumb drifted across his jaw. "Becca.I don't think you know what you're doing." He was rigid, his arms locked, but she felt his slight shudder. Moving forward away from the rail, she leaned up on tiptoe and pressed her lips against his briefly. She didn't know what to think when he still didn't move. His eyes had darkened and they were intensely focused on her, but he didn't do anything. She wasn't brave enough to push it any further. Why didn't he do something? Say something? A muscle in his jaw twitched, but other than that it was like he was made of stone. "I.ah." Shit, she had made the wrong move. Embarrassment flooded her and it left a bad aftertaste in her mouth. She never came on to anyone, not even her ex. Finally deciding to retreat, she moved to duck under his arm. "Don't. Move." His voice was firm.

Tammie King of NOR: Do you belong to a critique group? If so, how does this help or hinder you? Ashlynn Pearce: Yes, yes and yes! I'm an active member in my local RWA chapter and I wouldn't be here pimping my book without them. Because, frankly, I wouldn't have a book to pimp without them. I love my girls and they have supported me through thick and thin. If there are any aspiring writers out there the best advice I can give you is join a writing group. It's invaluable.

Tammie King of NOR: What would be the best way for readers contact you? Do you have a website? Email address? MySpace site? Blog? Message Board? Group? Ashlynn Pearce: The best way to contact me would be through my website, www.ashlynnpearce.com You can also find me on Facebook, AshlynnPearce.I love hearing from readers!

Tammie King of NOR: When did you first decide to submit your work? Please, tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step? Ashlynn Pearce: I always knew I would submit. It wasn't a matter of if, but when. When I finished ROUGH EDGES, I knew this was the one. This was the one I would use to try and break the ice. You can never be sure if it will sell, but I was going to give it my best shot. Luckily, Ellora'a Cave loved it.

Tammie King of NOR: Do you outline your books or just start writing? Ashlynn Pearce: I outline. I learned on my very first manuscript.I get really lost without a plot. But what's more important than plotting, is character development. I do very in-depth character pages that tell me everything about them. All the basics, hair and eye color, favorite music, to the more detailed stuff they don't want the world to know. What they hide is the most important. It's the heart of them. I'm also very visual and will search for the perfect picture of my characters. It's a lot of work, but it helps me get in touch with them, in turn, makes them believable to the reader.

Tammie King of NOR: Is there a genre of book you would like to write but haven't yet? Ashlynn Pearce: I started out writing historicals with a paranormal element. I never really planned on writing a contemporary or erotic, but Jake and Becca had been swimming in my head for a while and when I got stuck on my second historical, I decided I needed something fresh. My friend, Margaret, encouraged me to give it a shot. So I did. Writing hot comes naturally to me and this one just came out erotic. Ashlynn Pearce In Pursuit of Passion
