Savannah and Zeke Parker are a brother and sister writing team. This interview is with Savannah and she's answered some questions for Zeke.
What main genre do you write in?
Science Fiction / Fantasy
Current Release: Billy Scarlet
Describe your current release in two sentences?
After the orphanage where they grew up is destroyed, Billy Scarlet and her two friends Clara and Davy join the crew of a navy ship, The H.M.S. Victory. They are then thrust into an adventure that none of them could have possibly imagined.
Tell us a cool fact about your current release.
When we first started writing this story we were unaware that there was actually a ship in history called the H.M.S. Victory. We thought it was very cool that the ship had been real.
What are you working on?
We are currently working on the sequel to Billy Scarlet and another book called The Secret of Nautilus Island. It's another high seas adventure though it focuses more on the pirates than the sailors and it actually ties into Billy Scarlet's story as well.
Is there an author or book that has greatly influenced your writing?
I (Savannah) would say that my biggest inspiration for writing was Tolkien. He could write some of the most amazing adventures that could stand the test of time. My brother Zeke is more inspired by the author John Flanagan (writer of The Ranger's Apprentice series). He loves a great adventure and those stories take you on adventures that are hard to find anywhere else.
What one food could you not live without?
I could not live without chocolate. I love my chocolate. Zeke loves him some peanut butter. It has been his favorite forever.
Who is your intended audience?
Our books would be described as young adult for ages about 12 and up, but honestly we say that our books are for anyone who is seeking adventure. Books are supposed to take people out of their own world for a while, so our intended audience is anyone who wants to get out of their world for a bit and go on an adventure.
As a reader: Do you gravitate toward buying eBook or Print?
Ebooks can be a really good thing, but we still like having a print book. There's nothing like actually being able to turn the pages of a book that you are holding in your hands.
Who is the coolest character in your latest book?
We try not to choose favorites among our characters. Doing so almost makes me feel like I'm not being fair. Though I'd have to say that the coolest character would be Shadowlark. He's such a strong character and he's very deep. He can also juggle swords and torches at the same time which is really cool. Zeke's favorites is Jonny Ford. Jonny is not a really big character, but he comes into other stories of ours. Jonny is Zeke's character. Zeke inspired the character and he has developed his story.
Outside of writing - Do you have a hobby?
We work with film making and photography. We live on a farm so we are always working with animals, which is great. We play video games, mostly Star Wars and Legend of Zelda. Kind of nerdy, yes, but we look at video games like books that you play out. I make jewelry and draw, so all in all we have a lot of different hobbies.
Do you judge books by their covers?
I try not to judge a book by its cover. I try to give all books the benefit of the doubt. Zeke on the other hand has a way of looking at the cover of a book and telling me what the theme will be even if he hasn't read it. He can look at the picture on the cover and the font and tell me if the story is going to be happy or sad, scary, intense or mysterious. It's fun to listen to him when he starts analyzing a book cover.
A big thanks to everyone who has read this interview and who has read our story. We hope you enjoy reading the story as much as we enjoyed writing it. Keep and eye out for The Secret of Nautilus Island which will be coming out in July!
