Current Release: The Venetian Bargain
Describe your current release by starting out with "In a world".
In a world of Plague, Fire and War, three very different people set out to save 16th century Venice. They are Annibale Cason, a handsome plague doctor, Feyra bint Timurhan Murad, a beautiful doctor from the harems of Constantinople, and Andrea Palladio, an architect who hopes that a church that he builds will be enough to appease an angry God.
What are you working on?
I'm working on a book called BEATRICE AND BENEDICK, which is a prequel to Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. There's a clue in the text to suggest that Beatrice and Benedick had a youthful love affair which ended badly, and I thought: we know how it ended, but how did it begin?
Getting a book to market often takes a village. Who has helped you on the way?
My husband reads every chapter as I finish it, and as he is a screenwriter he is a great critic and is pretty much always right (but don't tell him that!) I also had a wonderful mentor in Leah Fleming who is a great writer from the same tiny village in Yorkshire in which I grew up. She gave me lots of advice and helped me find an agent, and I was very touched by her assistance. She could have seen me as competition and discouraged me, but she was extremely helpful.
Do you have a favorite or interesting reader meet moment?
I once met a lady who said she'd been in a gondola and asked to go to the Guggenheim. The gondolier refused to take her to see any foreign painters and took her to a Tintoretto exhibition instead. I admired his chauvinism so much I put him in a book!
What is your favorite way to procrastinate?
TV. I always think; 'I'll just watch this episode/news item/scene and then I'll start'. I tell myself I'm collecting plot ideas. Sometimes it's even true.
Thank you to everyone who has taken my hand and followed me on my journey to the Renaissance! I promise you more adventures to come...
