Current Release: What If
What's your book about?
Griffin Reed is buried under his parents’ expectations to follow in his father’s footsteps. He cloaks his own wants in self sabotage—until he picks up a pretty, red-haired hitchhiker. Maggie Kendall’s life is dependent on sticky notes, photos, and medication to get through each day. The last thing she needs is a distraction—or someone new to disappoint. Griffin and Maggie just might have a future if they could let go of the past. But that means taking a chance on the one thing they both avoid—complicated.
What should readers expect from you titles?
WHAT IF and my debut, IF ONLY, both offer emotional romance with some sexy times sprinkled in. I'm also a big fan of humor, so to balance out the angst, there's definitely a dose of funny. What I really want/hope to do is create characters readers will root for both individually and as a couple.
What's your writing process like?
I am a linear writer--like 100 % have to start writing with chapter one and end with the final chapter. I cannot write out of order. If I get an idea for a scene, but I'm not at that scene yet, then I jot it down on my phone or in an email to myself. When it's time, I cross my fingers I can find that note/email or even remember I wrote it in the first place. I usually remember. Mostly. Probably.
What books have you analyzed to help grow yourself as an author?
Blake Snyder's SAVE THE CAT is one of my favorite finds. Another writer friend recommended it. While it's a book geared toward screenwriters, the beat sheet method for plotting out a screenplay translates perfectly to writing a novel. I always beat sheet a story before drafting.
What's next for you as an author?
With WHAT IF just releasing on December 8th, I'm still coasting on the excitement of sending another book out into the wild. But it will be 2015 soon, which means I have two new books, a New Adult pair, releasing in April and October!
If you could have dinner with an author, who would it be?
Can it be a potluck dinner party with, I don't know, Stephanie Perkins, Gayle Forman, Rainbow Rowell, Laini Taylor, and Maggie Stiefvater (just off the top of my head)? Oh, you said AN author? I figure if we put a handful of my favs together, then at least me melting into a fangirl puddle wouldn't be as weird if it was just one-on-one. At least then they could all still enjoy the potluck and talk to each other.
What's your everyday life like? Do you write full-time or do you also hold another job?
And, here's the explanation for my YA fandom (other than just the fact that YA is pretty spectacular)--I'm a former English teacher turned high school librarian. I get to spend my days surrounded by books, getting students excited about books, and then at night I get to go home and write books. I'm a lucky girl.
Thanks, Night Owl readers! I'm so excited to share WHAT IF (Entangled Embrace) with you! Keep an eye out for my releases with Berkley/Intermix, ONE NIGHT (April 2015) and ONE LIFE (October 2015). Happy reading!
