Hi Readers! Tammie King here. Today I have the pleasure to be interviewing Carly Phillips. Carly's newest release is Dare to Rock.
Dare to Rock is the story of Avery Dare, the youngest “legitimate” Dare sibling and the one who donated bone marrow to her younger half-sister. Avery and Grey Kinston were high school sweethearts until Grey left her behind to find fame in L.A. … which he did. Now he’s ready to come home and claim her. But is Avery and the life she’s created ready for Grey and the craziness that comes with being a rock star? And are Grey’s fans ready to just let him go?
Hi Carly. What should readers expect from you titles?
Sexy, hot emotional reads. A Carly Phillips book will always give you a glimps into what made the hero and heroine who they are today and show their struggle to escape from whatever hurt them in the past. My current Dare reads are extremely hot contemporary stories that will make you smile, laugh, and sometimes cry.
What's your writing process like?
My writing process isn’t a pretty one. It really isn’t. Beginnings kill me. I get stuck. I procrastinate. The beginning of a book takes me longer than the entire book itself to nail down and get correct. I write forward … but always end up going back and weaving things in I forgot or just came up with before moving forward again. Through this, my critique partner reads each time I change … she has the patience of a saint. Once I hit around page 100 its easier. In theory LOL. Every book has different challenges.
What's next for you as an author?
I love the Dare to Love series that I am currently working on. Until I get a sense that readers are tired of them, I’ll be working on those for the immediate future. What’s great about the series for me as an author is that there are various family branches with their own issues that stem from one event – their father’s betrayal. I am finding new things to work with all the time within this series. To me that is challenging and fun. :)
Getting a book to market often takes a village. Who has helped you on the way?
I have been so lucky to have a solid group of people in my corner for a long time. Those who came later, along with the indie journey, are no less important. My critique partner, Janelle Denison aka Erika Wilde is my editor and my reader and my sanity for the last gazillion years! Julie Leto and Leslie Kelly are my plotting friends (not sure if anyone remembers us as The Plotmonkeys) and they are always around for a plot related question and they save me many times. Shannon Short is my daily go-to person on many levels. Chasity Jenkins Patrick – Rock Star Literary and PR shares my brain – we go back and forth on every idea and most times she reads my mind. Next up is my editor, Amy Knupp, who rocks, my review crew who catches errors missed along the way, Liza Brown and Heather Lire give a Beta read and a solid pat on the back which I always need! Off to formatting, and the awesome Paul Salvette at BB eBooks … and my assistant Nicole Kuhn who throws the best Facebook parties for my releases and helps push the book around the world! I always hate naming nnames because it means I will inevitably forget someone. I hope I didn’t this time around.
What's your day job like?
I am lucky enough to be a full time writer. Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t mean I write 24 hours a day. It does mean I work that many hours. Or it feels that way. I like to be up and working by 9 AM and after the writing, I plan eerrands or appointments, see friends for lunch on occasion … back in the afternoon for more writing or promoting, marketing, answering questions like these, etc. Again I’m so lucky because I love what I do!
Are you an introvert or extrovert?
I am an introvert with the occasional burst of energy that allows me to be an extrovert when needed. I don’t love large crowds, I prefer to be home and in a comfortable situation.
Thanks so much Carly for joining us today.
Thank you to Night Owl for having me here! And thank you to the readers who buy and read my books. I couldn’t do what I do without your enthusiasm for my work. Xo! Next up is DARE TO SEDUCE, Lucy Dare (a NY cousin) and Max Savage sometime in November. Thanks again!
