Before I started writing Welcome to the Neighborhood, I envisioned a paranormal suburbia. Basically, my neighborhood but instead of humans, supernatural creatures reside in the homes. Supernaturals have made their presence known and they want to fit into society. They've always been among us and they're not that different. They work, have families and friends, pay bills, etc. etc. They came out of hiding and it's time to accept we, humans, are not alone on this earth.
With my paranormal suburbia created, map drawn with streets and homes, I created a town called Westport and it sits outside of Indianapolis. Easy enough. Now to find occupants for the homes and my main characters for the story.
I have a variety of creatures in the Midnight Gardens community and each has their own quirks, naturally. For my first story, I wanted the main characters to be a vampire and werewolf. Why? The simple answer is the two are my favorite creatures.
I selected a female vampire as my protagonist. She's extremely independent, professional image as a financial wizard, stubborn, and has a bad history with men. As a result of the latter, she doesn't get involved with them. And since she's very strong and confident, she doesn't take their offers for help. She can handle everything on her own. So she thinks.
For the protagonist, I created a werewolf who is her opposite on most aspects, except for being strong minded. He has to work hard to tear down her barriers and gain her trust. Not an easy task since she is centuries old and emotionally scarred. But it can be done and he has the determination to prove he's a good guy with a loving heart. And more.
Oh, and I gave the two main characters a piece of me. They're fans of music from the 1980s. Hey, I wanted to write a club scene and I couldn't resist making it 80's night. Okay, maybe I had too much wine when I wrote that part. But it turned out very well. My characters would agree.
If you're curious to read about my paranormal suburbia and how my main characters face challenges and discover romance, I encourage you to check out Welcome to the Neighborhood.

Werewolf Gregory Holmes is instantly attracted to his new neighbor and wants nothing more than to protect her from any who would seek to harm her. Helping Alexi recover her stolen safe seems to be the perfect opportunity to show her how he feels.
Centuries of experience have shown Alexi all men are greedy pigs who only think with the brain below their belt. But as Greg comes to her aid repeatedly, she wonders if he’s the real deal.
