Top Three Highlights of My Tanzanian Adventure by Anna del Mar
I went to Africa on a non-writing, no-laptop vacation, to check off a bucket list item that entailed world-class wildlife viewing. I also wanted to pursue a life-long yearning to connect with my Caribbean-forged African heritage. Silly me. Little did I know that Africa was about to grab me by the throat, shake awake my soul, and capture my heart for good.
My latest novel, The Guardian was born from my travels through Africa and my experiences as a guest in Tanzania. Perhaps it was unavoidable that a setting as dazzling and magnificent as the Serengeti would spawn an epic love story in my mind. Maybe I should’ve seen it coming even before I boarded the long flight across the ocean. But the protagonists of The Guardian, Matthias and Jade, caught me completely by surprise.
In The Guardian, ex-SEAL turned game warden Matthias Hawking is engaged in a fierce battle to end poaching in Africa. But when Jade Romo, a beautiful, feisty journalist defies the poachers, Matthias will do everything in his power to protect the extraordinary woman who has captured his heart.
As you may imagine, I had a blast traveling through Tanzania and researching The Guardian. Africa is an incredible continent and Tanzania blew me away. The highlights of my trip were:
The stunning beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes are a treat to the eyes and inspiration to the soul. In the Serengeti, the grassy plains go on forever, dotted with the occasional kopjes, rocky outcrops that break the endless horizon. The crocodiles and the hippos rule the waterways. The water holes are places of drama where animals congregated. And the light. I’d never seen anything like it. At dawn and dusk, the light dazzles with shimmering tones of red, golds and cobalt that imbue the place with a magical quality. The Serengeti is a treasure and we must all endeavor to protect it.
Tanzania’s wildlife stuns and amazes at every turn. The lions are the stars that bring hordes of tourist-packed Land Rovers darting from the furthest corners of the Serengeti. Hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards round out the star cast. Only in Africa can you see these stunning predators in the wild. But despite the predator’s star power, by numbers, the Serengeti belongs to the herds. Zebras, wildebeests and buffalos dominate the plains and the water holes. The giraffes are everywhere. The diminutive Thompson’s gazelles and the delicate Grants can be seen at every turn and so are the warthogs strutting about, tails up, as if they owned the place. In fact, if you’d to see the images that inspired many of the scenes in The Guardian, click here to see a few of my pictures.
We were fortunate enough to see rhinos during our travels, even though these armored beauties teeter at the brink of extinction. The elephants too are in danger. I fell in love with these amazing, fascinating giants. Their social structure, intelligence and behavior is proof to me of higher awareness and ancient wisdom. That’s why elephants are featured prominently in The Guardian. The story centers on a terrible reality: Thousands of elephants are killed by poachers every year and the killing must stop.
The people of Africa are exceptional in every way. They left the greater mark on my soul. These extraordinary folks challenge the odds every day to build a better future for themselves and for humanity. These diverse, dynamic communities face complex, difficult, sometimes heart-breaking realities on the ground with skill, resilience, and wisdom. Their hopes and dreams inspired the story in The Guardian’s pages.
From the Amazon Bestseller author of The Asset and The Stranger comes Anna del Mar’s latest romantic suspense, The Guardian.
Ex-SEAL turned game warden, Matthias Hawking is engaged in a fierce battle to end poaching in Africa, but when a beautiful journalist defies the poachers, he will do everything in his power to protect the woman who has captured his heart.
Game Warden Matthias Hawking is a decorated ex-SEAL engaged in a grueling fight against ruthless poachers in Africa. He’s short on resources and long on enemies. There’s a price on his head. The last thing he needs is the unexpected arrival of a beautiful but stubborn journalist threatening to uncover his secrets, an alpha female challenging his alpha male and getting into trouble, a hurricane wearing boots.
Jade Romo is a veteran of several different kinds of war. She’s survived her heroin-addicted mother, the foster care system, and the conflict in Afghanistan. Jade’s tough, confident, cynical, and self-reliant, a woman who doesn’t believe in forevers. But when she defies the poachers and lands at the top of the warlord’s kill list, she’s forced to rely on the skilled, attractive but supremely infuriating game warden who has captivated her body’s undivided attention.
Haunted by his past but driven by his courage, her mysterious guardian will do anything in his power to protect the woman who has captured his heart.
