Comic-Con International MUSTS With Anne Elizabeth #ComicCon
Attending panels and events at Comic-Con is challenging! With signings, interviews, and meetings, I’m thrilled when I have time to walk the convention floor or attend something exciting. For those brief moments, I get most thrilled about the following.
Snapping as many pictures as possible of the outstanding costumes.
Going to Artist Alley - The talent is extraordinary, and it’s wonderful to chat with artists about their craft. If you collect gorgeous art, this is the place to go!
Visiting Terry Moore’s booth (AbstractStudiocomics.com) at Comic-Con International is always a blast! His series, Strangers in Paradise (Won the Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story and GLAAD for Best Book, and Moore just announced it’s going to be a movie, too!), is absolutely addictive and totally groundbreaking. Also, I’ve had more copies of my complete edition of ECHO disappear as friends smuggle this giant tome out of my house. Seriously, I’m on my fourth copy of this book! Spending time with Terry and his wife, Robyn, is memorable and a true delight. Oh yeah, if you read this, Terry, please make a compendium/collection of Motor Girl. Love the series and need to buy the last issue.
Checking out Frank Miller’s Booth—Batman: The Dark Knight, Daredevil, Hard Boiled, and 300—everything he does is visionary!
As most of my friends know, I’m a huge BIG BANG THEORY fan!!! One of my very favorite MUSTS is singing ‘Soft Kitty’ at least ten times with other BBT fans and hearing about their best-loved BBT episodes. Did you know that a bunch of PULSE OF POWER readers started a game called, Where’s Anne Elizabeth?—There have been nine sightings of my books on BBT. Sometimes it’s a glimpse, or there’s a giant framed print, but each and every moment is an honor!
At Comic-Con International in San Diego, I relish talking with readers! Why does a particular character draw them in, or what did they enjoy about the story… So, come by and check out BOOTH #2201 and gather some swell goodies. In 2018, I am planning giveaways associated with Issue #5 of ZOMBIE POWER. Of course, there will be all sorts of collectibles, too.
Movie Nights—Okay, so THIS is SO COOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!! At these movie nights, check the listing because they have all sorts of different kind of events, from big screen gatherings with popcorn where people wear costumes and others are in pajamas, and it’s like a giant laid-back chill-fest while watching great movies. Ticketed screenings are super-popular, highlighting sneak peeks of upcoming releases. I treasure the monster screen movies and try to attend the events hosted by the masterful actor and producer Lloyd Kaufman. C’mon, he did the Toxic Avenger! OMG!!!
Gatherings of the BrownCoats—Firefly. I WISH this series would continue!!! My booth used to be near their booth and seeing Nathan Fillion is a treat! I actually bumped into him once and he was charming, debonair, and thoughtful. He caught me, instead of dropping me on my tush. :)) And Josh Whedon—his version of singing the theme song is a beautiful western, bluesy and outright SHINY!!!! Firefly is a resplendent series.
Our granddaughter loves the Mattel Action figures (Katana was our last exciting find!) and I always zip by to see if there’s a new figure available (BTW, I hope she never outgrows them). She enjoys the DC Superhero book series written by Lisa Yee and Melissa De La Cruz’s Descendants series.
The Literacy and Teacher-related workshops are GREAT! If you enjoy learning new writing or teaching techniques, these are the workshops to check out. We played DUCK, DUCK COMICS at last year's workshop, hosted by the exceptional Mimi Cruz and led by Dave Elliott, Anina Bennett, and me.
Checking out the latest LEGOS for friends and family and trying to keep myself from joining the kids in playing with those marvelous blocks. I admit that I have several sets myself, including all the Scooby and several of the underwater sets. My grandson loves the dinosaur/Jurassic sets and several of our friends enjoy building the DC and Marvel Superhero Sets with their kids. It’s so much fun for all ages, and some day, we’re determined to tackle the Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters.
Grabbing a table at the San Diego Marriott Marina Bar in the evening. If you have the stamina, it’s very eye-opening to people-watch. Last year, we saw the talented and humorous Kevin Smith who was also having a party in the hotel. SyFy had practically an entire floor and had fascinating events, too. Don’t forget Adult Swim on the main convention floor. And, there are usually Dungeons and Dragons Events at either the Hyatt or Marriott (Listings on the Comic-Con website)—D&D ROCKS!!!! Oh, and friends at the Hilton kept seeing many of the science fiction stars attempting to wear very bad disguises and then chatting for hours on end when they were unmasked. Did I mention that last year at the Hilton, the piano from HBO’s Westworld was on display? I secretly would have enjoyed listening/watching for hours, but there wasn’t enough time. I wish Comic-Con would last for two weeks!
Here are my questions for fans:
1) Are you a fan of Star Trek or Star Wars, or both?
2) Would you pick Minions or Groot as your sidekick(s)?
3) What’s your favorite comic or book that’s been turned into a movie or TV Show? For example, do you like Charlaine Harris’ True Blood, Midnight Texas, or Aurora Teagarden Mysteries; Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swenson Mysteries; David Morrell’s First Blood (Rambo); Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner); Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas…
Have a wonderful holiday season and happy reading! :) AE
