Romance Writers of America – Who, What, Where, Benefits - Local & Online Chapters by June Faver + #BookGiveaway
Today we have June Faver over to share her experience with the Romance Writers of America.
My first encounter with RWA was in 1996 when I attended a West Houston RWA chapter meeting. It was the largest chapter and Houston is the birthplace of RWA. When asked to introduce myself, I stood up and very self-consciously said, “Well, I don’t actually write romance...” and they laughed. The response was, “There’s always a romance.” And indeed there is.
While living in Houston, I also joined NW Houston RWA, which is the original chapter, the birthplace of RWA. And finally, I joined the Bay Area RWA south of Houston. You may ask why I joined all 3 chapters, and the answer is, each chapter has a different personality and I was learning so much.
The other reason for belonging to RWA was the professional fellowship. Nobody understands writers, like writers. Who else can commiserate over the highs and lows and frustrations involved in taking a story from the fuzzy recesses of one’s brain to the actual or virtual page?
In general, a chapter meeting starts off with a short business review and then a program is presented. The program may be about the craft of writing, or perhaps a multi-published author or industry professional will be presenting, and sometimes there is research involved...like a visiting SEAL. There were field trips, as well. I got to fire all kinds of guns at a firing range, under the tutelage of experts.
Some chapters sponsor writing contests, and/or conferences, which are always extremely informative.
And finally, there are fabulous on-line chapters to serve the needs of special interests, such as the Beau Monde, which is dedicated to those writers of the Regency romance.
Not me...I barely have a grasp of the present, so in addition to my in-person chapter, I also belong to online chapters CRW (Contemporary Romance Writers) and KOD (Kiss of Death) because I really, really do enjoy killing off a pesky character or two. Bwa-ha-ha-ha...
All of my chapters are very supportive and great friendships have evolved.
I would encourage any writer to join a chapter to soak up all the information so freely given. The industry is changing like a kaleidoscope, so it’s good to keep up.
