I want it now, damn it!
Patience is a virtue, but not one of mine. When writing Into the Magic, I just had to give my heroine, Star Lite, a bit of impulsiveness also. In the excerpt below she is learning to use her newfound magical abilities, but does not want to proceed at the pace that her teacher, Tristan, is going. He's methodical and insists they start with the basics, but she wants to learn faster to be able to help Adam, the new love in her life.
Yep, that's me too. When I start to learn a new skill I want to know everything immediately. Unfortunately, that's not how life works. Acquiring expertise in an area takes time, practice and patience. Though I know this, I often want to hurry the process and get to the level I desire quickly. As in this excerpt, rushing sometimes leads to unfortunate results.
I hope you enjoy this peek at Into the Magic. What happens when you get impatient? I would love to hear from you!
Into the Magic - The Adventures of Star Lite, #2
Good and evil, love and lust. Add magic to the mix and watch the sparks fly.
Star Lite exercises her emerging magical talents to search for Adam, the seductive stranger who captivated her heart during an extraordinary adventure. Her every sense tells her they are meant to be together, yet he has disappeared. Certain he's in danger, she tracks him down and they meet in Las Vegas, where emotions flare and flames ignite.
But Adam must complete a mysterious mission and sends her away. She uses the time waiting for Adam to study with Tristan, a passionate magician with secrets of his own. As Star’s powers are unlocked, she questions the rulings of the authoritarians who control magic.
Against Tristan and Adam’s warnings, a premonition moves her to go back to Vegas. There, a new facet of her power puts her life in peril. For protection, Tristan, Adam and Star engage in a sizzling ménage ritual. Join Star as she opens her heart and soul to love, and continues her journey into the magic.
So they began their studies. Tristan came to visit for an hour or two each day and quizzed Star on what she'd read the day before. He encouraged her to ask questions and gave her input. Star found him knowledgeable and easy to talk to, and looked forward to his visits. She was an apt pupil, though often annoyed. A logical person by nature, the non-scientific nuances of magic frustrated her.
One day, after attempting a process several times, Star threw up her hands in irritation.
“It didn't work. I mixed the potion like the directions said, but nothing happened.”
“Really? Did you mix it exactly according to the instructions? I don't recall seeing you place the amethyst in the bowl with the other ingredients, or speaking the spell,” Tristan said.
“Oh come on, it's a rock, a solid mass. It can't affect the chemistry of those herbs in the bowl.”
“You don't think crystals have an effect on other objects? They don't have energy? Tsk-tsk, Star, you haven't been paying attention. They do indeed, and they're an important part of the spells we're learning. All objects emit vibrations, correct?”
“Yes.” Star sighed. “This is the opposite of the science I know. Elements react to stimulus in a certain manner. A plant is not going to change its structure and become something else because a stone is placed on it and a few words are spoken.”
“It's not only the stone, the ingredients or the words you say. It's the motions you make, the intent you put forth. All of these together create the transformation needed to make the spell work. That's the magic.” Tristan put his hand on Star's arm. “You're not going to 'get' this overnight. There's a lot to it and it's quite complex.”
“But I want to learn faster. I need to be able to help Adam.”
“Why do you think he's going to need your help?”
“I… I just have a feeling he is. You've been telling me I should listen to my feelings, my intuition, right?”
“Yes, you're correct, you should. You can help him most by paying attention to the simple things I'm teaching you and doing them right. The more powerful magic will come later. Are you ready to try again? The correct way this time?”
Star flopped onto the couch and folded her arms across her chest.
“Nope, I'm not ready to try again. I have a question for you. If there are so many powerful magicians running around…”
“There aren't that many.”
“Okay, if there are even a few, why aren't they doing more magicky things? Like winning millions at the horse races, or seizing control of the world? Why aren't assholes like Lucas running amok, taking anything they want?”
“There are a group of people called the Vigilar. They can trace the use of magic. If there is a trail of too much magic, they spot it. Most people using it stay within limits, because if they go beyond what the Vigilar consider acceptable, they'll be taken in and reprimanded.”
“Reprimanded? What will the Vigilar do?”
“The first time is a warning. Some folks, like you, don't realise they have powers, and when they find out, they don't realise they can't use magic any time they like--”
“Why not? Why can't I use my magic whenever I want?”
“The Vigilar have determined what is a safe amount for us to use, to avoid detection and to keep the correct balance in this world. That's one of the reasons it's so important to practise and learn to control your power.”
“What will they do to someone who they decide is using too much?”
“They'll put an implant in their body. The implant contains potions to keep the person from accessing their magic, and the Vigilar can instantly see any time they use it.”
Star stared at him with her mouth open. “So these Vigilar can decide if someone doesn't live within the parameters they've come up with?”
“You would have to be doing an awful lot of magic to pop up on their radar, and you will be warned first.”
“Have you ever been hauled in to see them?”
“Yes. Now, back to your potion.”
“Tell me what happened when you saw the Vigilar.”
“No, that discussion is over. Potion. Now.”
Star had learned better than to push Tristan. She reluctantly returned to the bowl, determined to hear more about his experience with that group of people.
* * * *
One night that week, Star tossed and turned and finally got out of bed. She wandered to the kitchen and peered into the refrigerator in hopes of finding something good to eat, but nothing appealed to her. What she really wanted, she knew, was to use her magic to move a large object again, but Tristan had said she wasn't ready. Though Star had pointed out that she had successfully shoved a star out into space, as well as tossed around a few couch pillows, Tristan had reminded her that she'd been with two other powerful magicians to move the star, and that residual magic from her time with Adam had enabled her to move objects after she'd returned from her last trip.
Picking up the book she was using for studies, she found the section on telekinesis and recalled Tristan's words. The instructions must be followed exactly as written when one was learning. Once a magician became proficient, modifications were allowed. So, she would follow the instructions exactly and try this more difficult spell. What could happen?
Okay, cast a circle, real or imaginary. Done. Call up the four quarters. North, South, East, West, done. Combine several herbs, hold the crystal and say the words. Done. Star concentrated all her energy on the couch, waiting for it to move. Damn, what was wrong? She'd cast the spell correctly. Why didn't anything happen?
As she recalled how she had felt when she, Adam and Zander had hurled that giant stone, her hands balled into fists. The power had rippled through her body, like waves of energy. If she could call it up then, why couldn't she do it now? Where was this magic? And what good was it if she couldn't use it when she wanted to? It was pointless to play around with herbs, crystals and chants when she knew she could move matter. That's what Tristan should be showing her, not the other, impractical lessons he'd insisted she learn.
With a surge of anger and frustration, Star flung her hands at the couch, cursing. What was that? Did it move? Something happened. She peered closely. Oh, shit! Smoke rose from the centre cushion, and, as she watched in horror, it burst into flame.
She grabbed her fire extinguisher and quickly shot the chemical at the fire before it could do much damage. Coughing from the smoke and fumes, Star opened the window and door. Great. Now she would have to buy another couch. Just when this one had got comfortable. She grabbed the smouldering cushion and headed outside to prop it on the dumpster, hoping none of her neighbours took notice.
Angry and embarrassed, but not ready to give up her efforts, she slunk back to bed for the night.

Instead of the uneventful summer vacation she has planned, she's transported to a strange planet with even stranger inhabitants, and an irritating but sexy man named Adam who claims he's a magician.
Star senses danger in this place, and her suspicions are confirmed, as the two humans witness a bizarre display of power from a mad king.
