Desiree Holt, My Cats Made Me Do It #Pets
It's funny how animals can change your life so much. My late husband and I had a sweet little black cat, Nefertiti for seventeen years. She went everywhere with us. When we lived in a golfing community my husband taught her how to ride in the golf cart with us (not on the course, of course!), and also how to walk on a leash. I have great pictures of her when we spent some time walking the beach at South Padre Island.
But then Nefertiti at the age of seventeen, crossed the rainbow bridge to kitty heaven. The house was so very empty, and finally we couldn’t stand it any more. So, off to the animal shelter we went, looking for another adorable little black cat. But a funny thing happened on the way to the shelter. We discussed getting two little black cats so they could play with each other. Except there was this really cute little ball of white fluff that we couldn’t stop cuddling. And while I was holding her, a little torty (tortoise shell), sitting n a shelf off my right shoulder, jumped into my arms on top of the white ball of fluff and started licking my chin.
Well, of course you know what happened. We went home with three kittens!
They have grown up together and become so intrinsic to my life. When my husband crossed his own rainbow bridge, it was the cats who kept me going. Cuddling me at night, sitting near me during the day. Of course, after a while they got the idea they were in charge. When I was at my desk writing, they were either next to my feet or sitting on my desk. Sometimes they would bang their paws on the keys, a subtle hint, I think, that they didn’t like either the book or the characters.
At night, when I would make notes for the next day’s work, at least two of them sat on my lap in bed, watching on my iPad to make sure I didn’t write anything they didn’t like. When people ask me why I haven’t written such and such, I always tell them, ask my cats. Or when I decided to end a series, I told them my cats made me do it.
So the question became—what do my cats like me to write. They got all excited with my cowboys, even rolled all over the cover when I printed it out. And they loved my books about musicians. Eventually they pestered me to write a book about a cowboy who was a musicians. (PS: they knew my secret. I was in the music business for ten years in my younger days.)
That was how Downstroke was born.
A former hot country rock singer now rising to glory again. The woman he hadn’t seen for twenty years. A stalker with his gun sites on the hero. I envisioned him as a cross between Kenny Rogers and the actor Christopher Stone. How did I get to that? The cats and I were curled up in my bed one night, and I was watching YouTube videos of Kenny, and they got very excited. (Did I tell you they are all female?) Chris Stone was my contribution.
They wanted to help me write the songs I included in the book, but can you believe it? They sing way off key!
Anyway, Downstroke is now out there at your favorite etailers. When you read it, share it with your pets. Mine loved the finished product.
Downstroke - Love Notes
It’s been twenty years since Charley Roper and Dallas Creed parted with great bitterness. In that time, she’s made a career for herself with the FBI and private security and he’s been a country rock music icon…tumbled to the bottom and risen again. Now someone’s trying to kill him, and Morgan Creed wants Charley to protect his brother and find out who’s after him. When they meet again after all this time it’s obvious the chemistry is still there, stronger than ever. They’re older, but are they wiser? Caught up in the bitter wash of memories and the tension of a killer in stalking mode, Charley and Dallas begin a roller coaster ride that is emotional erotic and suspenseful. Is their love strong enough after twenty years to pull them back together?
