Love Triangles, Quadrangles and Other Messes
Love is complicated, awkward and never seems to arrive respecting anyone's schedule. But rather than love being a disreputable houseguest we try to dodge at our doorstep, love is sought out and embraced by most of us with foolish abandon.
That's the way love is in the 13 to Life series. It's a mess. Readers know that things are complicated between Jessie, Pietr and Sarah. Jessie and Pietr aren't a "love at first sight" sort of couple. Although I may have my romantic moments and leanings, I couldn't write a love at first sight story. It doesn't ring true to me. Lust at first sight? Sure. But love? Real love takes far more than a single glance to be established. So my characters (and their emotions) are complicated from the beginning.
Falling in love really isn't what Jessie had planned for her junior year in high school. Dealing with the aftermath of a tragic car crash? Unfortunately yes. Trying to do what her mother would have wanted her to do? Regardless of how it hurts her--yes. Keeping her grades up and her friendships as stable as possible? Yes. But love? Not even on her radar. Sure, she's been crushing on a guy for a while, but let's be frank, crushes are a far cry from the bonding that comes with love.
So, when love walks in carrying plenty of his own baggage (and being hunted by some truly dangerous types) things get difficult.
Then add in a little good-old-fashioned teenage angst. Who can't remember what it was like to be a teen and in love? Talk about awkward and complicated and--well--passionate. Two girls after the same guy and one girl wants to do the right thing but tends to fall into martyr mode. Hey, she's young. So one girl hands over the thing she wants most. Sort of.
Yes, love's complicated.
And authors occasionally get crucified for writing love triangles or, as emerges in Secrets and Shadows (out 2/15/11) something even more difficult. And distinctly dangerous. Because if love is complicated and awkard for us normal folks, imagine how rough it is when it involves werewolves and other paranormal entities.
