Christie Craig on Keeping It Fresh: Cold Cases, Hot Cops and Texas Tempers #LettersFromtheAuthors
Have you ever heard writers talk about the book that wouldn’t leave them alone? A plot or a character that hung out in the recesses of their mind for years on end? Well, Don’t Close Your Eyes is the story I created and carried around in the deep, dark crevasses of my brain for twenty-three years.
In 1995, I’d seen a contest advertised that included screen plays. I’d never written one and thought, why not? So I took a screen writing class. While brainstorming an idea, I recalled a movie that had struck a chord with me. It had unsettled me and yet at the same time intrigued me. The Prince of Tides. The plot about damaged characters and how childhood dysfunction lingers years later, left some footprints on my creative soul. So I wanted to write something that explored that theme. A bit of a psychological thriller with characters overcoming the demons in their past, about them discovering skeletons in their family closets and being forced to dance with them.
So I came up with an idea, To Remember Jenny. The story is about a heroine with a repressed memory set to unravel and a cold case cop with his own memories he’s determined to forget. He helps her unearth the mystery that leads them to not just one body, but two. She helps him face his demons and focus on a future.
I entered that contest and amazingly, I won. But knowing how hard it was to sell a screen play, I put it aside. Ten years later, I had written eight humorous, romantic suspense novels that were being shopped around. Searching for a new idea, To Remember Jenny tiptoed back into mind.
I decided to write it as a novel. It was much darker than what I was writing, but why not give it a shot? So I wrote the first chapters and entered it in a contest. It won again and was requested. But that same month, my humorous, romantic suspense novels sold. So again, To Remember Jenny got pushed to the back burner. Fast forward eleven years to 2017. I’d found myself wanting to try my hand at something different. And dadblast it if that story didn’t unearth itself and creep back into the gotta-write-that part of my brain.
I dusted off the cobwebs of the plot, revisited what it was about the movie that sparked a creative thread, and I started from page one. I tweaked it and added secondary characters so I could make it into a trilogy.
I found my tag line for the series. Cold cases, hot cops and Texas tempers. That twenty-three old plot became the Texas Justice series. To Remember Jenny got a fresh new title, Don’t Close Your Eyes, and it will release August 28th.
