Like many kids who grew up reading Dick and Jane and watching Leave it to Beaver, I expected life as a grown-up to be fairly simple. You go to college, you get married, you have 2.5 kids, and you live in a white house with a picket fence. Eventually your own kids grow up and you become a plump white-haired grandma who bakes cookies.
But does anyone actually do that these days? Even if your life follows the expected pattern, it rarely has that kind of sit-com simplicity. Robert Burns was right; the best laid schemes “aft gang agley.” No matter how carefully we map out our plans, something always pushes us off-course—and that something is almost always love. Love is unexpected, unpredictable, and often inconvenient, but one thing is for sure: it changes everything.
Back in the Dick-and-Jane era, romance novels tended to perpetuate the myth that happily-ever-after was right around the corner. All those lovelorn nurses snagged their dreamy doctor. All those fashionable flight attendants found their hot-shot pilot. And the girl next door always got the boy.
Nowadays, romance novels are more like real relationships: complex, conflict-ridden, and loaded with obstacles. Sure, the hero and heroine find their happily-ever-after, but it takes a while, and it’s not easy. There’s always a hurdle for the heroine to leap before she can find happiness, and often that hurdle seems insurmountable.
In Cowboy Crazy, cowboy Lane Carrigan is everything Sarah Landon doesn’t want. He’s a rodeo cowboy who treasures his family’s ranching roots; she’s an Ivy League graduate who can’t wait to kick the country dust off her boots. They’re headed in opposite directions, and that makes their head-on collision hit even harder—especially since falling for Lane forces Sarah to confront the secrets and lies of her past.
But Sarah can’t completely leave her roots behind—not when she’s helping her single-mom sister raise a child. And Lane can’t escape the responsibility that comes with his family’s new-found wealth, either. The two of them need to compromise, and they learn to hold onto their pasts while embracing the present—and each other!
It’s lucky for me that today’s romance novels reflect the unpredictable twists and turns of real life. I couldn’t write them any other way, because my own road to love was not an easy one. When I met my husband, I had a lot of hurdles set up, and so did he. I’d sworn off love and vowed to live a fully independent life. He was coming to terms with life as a divorced dad. Love was the last thing we were looking for, and just like in a romance novel, it turned up when we least expected it.
We’ve never had a picket fence, and I’m not planning to be a gray-haired Grandma as long as I can get my hands on a box of Lady Clairol. So the only part of the Dick-and-Jane life I got was the happily-ever-after.
And as it turns out, that’s the one part I really wanted.
How about you? What kind of hurdles have you had to leap on the road to happiness? Was your path to love a smooth super-highway or a rutted dirt road? Tell us in the comments!
