How Two Puppies Inspired a Sizzling Romance - Anna Durand
Writers find inspiration in many places, some ordinary and some surprising. My previous stories have stemmed from science articles (the Reborn series), real government research projects (the Psychic Crossroads series), and mythology (the Undercover Elementals series). My latest release, Wicked in a Kilt (Hot Scots, Book Two), got a big part of its story from my life.
Last year was a rough one for my family. My dad passed away suddenly, for reasons no one could explain, which made it all the more devastating for the lack of answers. As the months went by after his passing, I had to deal with shutting down the company we had built together and restructuring it as my business, along with all informing his friends and colleagues of his passing. In the midst of all this, my elderly dog died, and I set out on a search for a dog to adopt.
I couldn't believe how hard it was to find a dog to rescue, since the only dogs at the shelters were "problem" dogs who couldn't be around other animals. I have a seventeen-year-old cat, as well as two horses. After a four-month interstate search, I finally adopted two adorable mutts who were seven weeks old at the time. Having these two around helped me recover from a terrible time in my life and remember how to have fun. Nobody knows how to do that better than puppies! My furry girls are now a little over a year old and as rambunctious as ever.
How does this figure into a sizzling, contemporary romance? Living with two puppies inspired me to include a similar pair of fuzzballs in Wicked in a Kilt.
My heroine, Calli Douglas, is like me in many ways. She's a librarian and she's suffered a major loss. In her case, she lost both her parents. She has other problems too, and I decided to give her the same recovery tool I had found, in the form of two bouncing puppies. When the story starts, Calli's girls are six months old and they are her only company in her backwoods hideaway. I loved including the puppies in the story -- because they add a whimsical element, they give Calli someone to talk to when she's alone, and they provide a way to show the character of the man she with whom she becomes involved, Aidan MacTaggart. After all, how could a girl not fall for a man who tumbles around in the grass with puppies?
As Calli learns early in the book, you know you need to get out more when you ask your dogs for fashion advice! Including animals in a story gives us these humorous moments, as well as sweet moments when our pets comfort us. And often, the inspiration for the best fiction comes from real life.
Wicked in a Kilt - Hot Scots Book 2
An even feistier American. A wickedly hot Scot. Passion ignites.
Calli Douglas has avoided romance for five years, bound by a promise she never should've made to a man she doesn't love. Now, he refuses to let her go. When she leaves her backwoods hideaway to attend her cousin's wedding, Calli has no intention of meeting a man. But fate has other plans--in the form of one scorching-hot Scotsman.
Aidan "Don Juan" MacTaggart is the living embodiment of carnal pleasure and seductive prowess, but he longs for love and commitment. The moment he sets eyes on Calli, the stunning American captivates him. Though she's sworn off sex and romance, unraveling the mystery of why tantalizes Aidan almost as much as her sensual curves.
As their passion for each other inspires them to explore their steamiest desires, a deeper bond takes root. But when secrets from both their pasts threaten their happiness, they must confront their fears or lose everything.
