Get Your Research On With Desiree Holt #LettersFromtheAuthors
Research is not just informative, it’s fun!
I love doing research for my books, for a lot of reasons.
First of all I get to find out more about the places I already know. When I lived in Texas so many of my books were based in the Hill Country and its ranches and its quaint places like Luckenbach. Friday afternoons were fun at Luckenbach, with the “pickers” under the big tree outside and people drinking beer and singing along. And of course, the cowboys. Lordy, I never got enough of the cowboys.
When I moved back to Florida I shifted my locales, and discovered how much I didn’t know, even though I had lived here for twenty years in the past. The inspiration for the romantic suspense series, Vigilance, came from my time spent at Fort Myers Beach. I’d been there before, of course, but when I got to stay there for three weeks in a cottage on Estero Bay, I got to immerse myself in the quaintness and charm of a typical small Florida tourist town.
I frequented the places with cute names, had dinner on the water, watched people bringing their boats in to the marinas. Talked to people about why they liked to come there.
I do have to say, however, that the inspiration for the main restaurant and marina in the vigilance series comes from a place right down the street from where I live in on the water South Tampa. I have a fabulous cop I met who is of incredible and unequaled value. Joe Trainor helps me with everything from how to execute a kidnapping in a gas station to the process when someone is arrested. He answers my questions tirelessly and makes sure I do not make mistakes.
Anyway. Joe is the one who turned me on to the Hula Bay Club, where you can sit inside or out and watch the boats on the Water or, to the left, in the marina. I even learned what a dry slip warehouse is, so watch for it in a future story. They have interesting drinks (I’d love to work my way through THAT menu) and all the food, from sushi to blackened group to hamburgers is an epicurean delight.
Blake Morgan, the hero of WITHOUT WARNING (Vigilance Book #2), has moved to Tampa, and lives in a condo on the water. So I took a ride on what’s called the Pirate’s Taxi which takes you all around Hillsborough Bay and lo and behold, there were condos, with boats slips, right in front of my eyes. I posted them on Instagram before but I’ll do it again, so you can see where he lives.
In the course of researching this particular series I found great restaurants and bars and historical sites, and met a lot of fun and interesting people. B y the time I sit down to write, my brain is already in high gear, inspired but what I’ve seen and learned. I try to base everything on real places.
I hope you will try WITHOUT WARNING which just released, plus Book #1, HIDE AND SEEK.
I love to hear from readers so email me, find me on social media let me know what you think. Joe Trainor and I will put it in a book!
Without Warning - Vigilance, #2

After years of hard work honing his craft, Blake Edwards is now an international bestselling author. But one thing he never imagined was that his fictional world would become all too real. But the body assigned to keep an eye on him is someone he never wants out of his sight...
As a bodyguard for Vigilance, the private security agency in Blake’s hometown of Arrowhead Bay, Samantha Quenel has found the perfect outlet for her military experience.
