Small Town Secrets
by Genie Gabriel
Many thanks to Night Owl Reviews for having me as a guest today as I'm in the last-minute throes of preparing for the launch of my LEGACY series on March 1. This series is based in the fictional small town of Halo.
In small towns, everyone knows everyone else's business. Right?
I grew up in a small town--though not as small as Halo, my fictional town of seventy-five citizens who embody the pioneer spirit of the Old West miners who were their ancestors.
As an adolescent, I witnessed my teenaged brothers' indiscretions--plus embellishments--reach my parents before said brothers arrived home. Made me pretty much walk the straight and narrow.
Yet beneath the small-town grapevine lay the roots of darker secrets nobody talked about. Things I discovered years later as an adult. Events that triggered the fertile "what if" imagination of my writer's mind.
This contradiction of openness and secrecy provides a perfect backdrop for the characters in my LEGACY series--people who seek the truth and try to live with integrity. One choice may uncover the truth but bring danger. Another decision may seem to provide safety, but leave unanswered questions.
**A sigh of relief flowed through Marly’s body, brought up short by the sudden reappearance of the man beside her vehicle. Many times her brothers scolded her for being too trusting. Narrow hips and long legs snugly encased in worn blue jeans could belong to a serial killer as easily as a white knight.
“Step out while I check your vehicle for damage.” A jagged scar over the man’s right eyebrow gleamed as he reached for her door handle.
Every murder mystery she read as a teenager gave the bad guy a scar. She wasn’t taking any chances. Adrenaline pumped through Marly’s body once again as she leveled the taser at the man’s chest. “Stop right there.” **
Ally or foe? Amid the uneasy peace the citizens of Halo thought they had reached long ago, the darkness grows, until one day the shadows intrude on their everyday lives. What is the truth? Who are the bad guys? Can you trust your neighbors and people you thought were your friends?
**“Most of the folks up Fool’s Gold Road will shoot a stranger first and then ask their name,” Dawson said.
“What if he’s not a stranger?”
Marly’s words chilled Dawson. In the years he had been a deputy in Halo, the worst crimes had been Bigsy Dalton taking the gorilla costume last week and Boogie Miller stealing cans of spray paint from the General Store several years ago to paint graffiti on the fence surrounding the house of the town's founders to scare the ghost away.
Even the recent prescription drug ring hadn’t touched Halo’s tiny pharmacy.
Much as he hated to consider it, Marly could be right about the perpetrator being someone who lived in the area. Strangers were greeted with skepticism, but someone familiar could pretty much walk through any unlocked door unchallenged.
But who? And why?**
When nothing is clear, the heroes and heroines of the LEGACY series must find a way to keep their loved ones and fellow citizens safe. They are everyday people who struggle with decisions and face difficult challenges--whether in the form of a villain who's supposed to be dead or the tortured thoughts of their own minds. And, in the end, find the path of integrity that leads to their deepest desires.
**A sense of relief swept through [Deputy Dawson Browning] as he turned in the last of the paperwork and drove toward home. Though the man-beast that had attacked Claudia deGras and Boogie Miller was still at large, shutting down the prescription drug ring should give his childhood friend, Sheriff Reid Weston, some positive news to use in his political campaign.
For Dawson, the thought of making the area safer for the citizens of Halo gave him the most satisfaction. The children who played in the mud-and-snow covered yard of the three-room schoolhouse; the older women who baked him cookies; and even the residents of Fools Gold Road who existed at the edges of the law had one less worry.
Tonight, he could go home with the feeling of a job well done.**
Welcome to Halo, a small town where I'd like to live, among people I'd be proud to call my friends and lucky to have as my neighbors.
You can join the citizens of Halo at <http://oshealegacyseries.blogspot.com> or at my Web site <www.GenieGabriel.com>.
The first book of this series, PICTURE PERFECT LEGACY, releases March 1, with another book being released every two months throughout 2012 and 2013.
I hope you will join me and all the LEGACY family for this adventure, and perhaps share your own small-town secret.
The names of commenters will be entered in a drawing to win all three e-books of my Rock'n'Romance trilogy. The second book of this trilogy offers a sneak peak into the lives of the citizens of Halo--hometown of my LEGACY series.
I'll also be running contests on my LEGACY blog, so please stop by often.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
For years I've been fascinated by the puzzle of why some people collapse under life's traumas and others emerge triumphantly stronger. These triumphs of the human spirit over the ugliest of adversities became the basis for my stories. Yet my dramatic stories have always contained touches of humor, and sometimes I have great fun writing romantic comedy novellas. However, in all my stories, my passion for writing romance is an outlet for the powerful messages that people can overcome great difficulties, and true love can turn life’s heartaches into happily ever after.
