Hi everyone, and big thanks to Tammie for inviting me to Night Owl Romance. I'm thrilled to be here!
Just a few short words to introduce my new series, the Shadowfae Chronicles. It's dark, steamy urban fantasy with strong romantic plotlines. The first book, Shadowfae, is about Jade, a succubus in thrall to hell, who must battle crafty vampire gangsters, a vengeful sorcerer and a sexy, dangerous incubus who steals her heart, in order to claim her freedom and start a normal life.
For those who aren't familiar, a succubus in traditional mythology is a female demon who seduces men and steals their energy, driving them to madness and eventual death. Her male counterpart, the incubus, was traditionally a demon who impregnated unsuspecting women with the devil's spawn.
Not your traditional romance hero or heroine! But in paranormals we've humanised vampires, werewolves, demons, all kinds of monsters – they're no longer evil, but merely creatures who must be what they are and live with the consequences. They're just like humans – trying to survive in a dangerous world.
My heroine, Jade, isn't an evil creature intent on damnation and destruction. In fact, she's not even a demon. She's a human, pressed into a demon's service for a thousand years, and she's miserable about it. Her demon lord uses her soul-stealing power as a weapon in his territorial wars, and after 150 years of cold, emotionless liaisons, Jade feels worthless and alone. Her magic tricks her victims into seeing her as their ultimate fantasy, and she's convinced that no one would ever want her as she really is.
And to make matters worse, the guy she's falling for is an incubus. Rajah has the same demonic powers as she, but he's gorgeous, confident and clever. Women are falling all over him, magic or no. She doesn't dare hope he'd ever be interested in her. And besides, surely even an incubus couldn't bear to love a woman whose job it is to sleep with other men? Unless Jade and Rajah can win their freedom and cast off the demon's magical shackles, they'll never be able to lead a normal life together.
And that's what I love about urban fantasy and paranormal romance – it helps us view the world through different eyes. The eyes of an outcast, a monster, a demon. Someone who can't lead a normal life, no matter how much they yearn to, but can still find room in their heart for love.
Thanks so much for having me here today. If you'd like to get a feel for the flavour of the Shadowfae series, you can download a free short story about Jade at my website: http://www.shadowfae.net
