Enemies to Lovers - Bec McMaster, Sara Humphreys, Susanna Ives and Kristen Callihan
If there’s one trope that’s easy to love it is Enemies to Lovers! Join romance authors Sara Humphreys, Bec McMaster, Susanna Ives, and Kristen Callihan as they tell us who their favorite fictional ”enemies to lovers” couples are.
Sara Humphreys (Vampires Never Cry Wolf): In fiction, I'd have to say Katherine and Petruchio from THE TAMING OF THE SHREW and probably because it's the original enemies to lovers story. The modern day twist on that classic was tackled in the film 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. I love that movie. I could watch it over and over and it's not just because Heath Ledger was a total hottie. Okay...maybe that's part of the reason. :)
Bec McMaster (Of Silk and Steam): I adore some of Lisa Kleypas' works, and her Devil in Winter and Secrets of A Summer's Night are absolute favorites of mine. I think her Secrets just wins out for me: Annabelle is such an unlikely heroine. She's determined to set her cap for a titled husband, because she wants to both save her penniless mother and brother, and also she wants to live a life of luxury. She's unashamed to admit that she wants that security, that she doesn't want to be penniless - or at the mercy of the man who is using her mother as his mistress (or men like him). She is vain, and arrogant, and unashamedly honest in her desires, and her excitement over pretty shoes and being spoiled, and I love her to bits. When Simon, a self-made butcher's son, comes onto the scene he makes it clear that he wants her, even in the face of her assurances that he's not good enough. It's a story of back-and-forth, back-and-forth, as Annabelle slowly realizes that what she thinks she wants isn't truly what her heart desires.
Susanna Ives (Wicked, My Love): Beauty and the Beast-- the fairytale archetype of enemies to lovers. I also love Harry and Sally from When Harry Met Sally.
Kristen Callihan (Soulbound): I think my very favorite couple is Max and Victoria from Colleen Gleason’s Gardella Vampire Hunters series. Theirs is a five book arc, going from loathing to love. It’s such a well done relationship, and by the time they finally do say “I love you” I was so freaking happy to see it that I read those scenes over and over. Lol
