I think it’s pretty safe to say that we all have our personal catnip when it comes to Romance heroes. Playboy Rake. Alpha Boss. Charming Beta. Sexy Professor. Hard-headed Warrior. I could go on but my personal fave…the one that tends to thrill me like no other, is the Dark Brooding Hero.
You know the one. The guy who warns the heroine away from him even as he gazes at her with carefully concealed pain and longing. Of course, she can’t stay away. He’s the most resistant, the most solitary, often the most mysterious and dangerous of the romance heroes because it takes so much for him to reveal his inner thoughts. Vulnerability is not his forte. In fact, he probably developed all that dark broodiness to shield his soft center and he’s not going to give it up easily.
It’s probably safe to say that when it comes to romance heroes, he is the one who must go through the greatest transformation for Love. For very personal and often traumatic reasons, he has believed for too long that there is little goodness or beauty in the world. And if he comes across anything of the sort, he is pretty damn sure he is unworthy of it. It is difficult for him to trust his own feelings or to consider that loving someone could end in anything but disaster. In most cases, this hero has to change his whole world view in order to accept that he is capable of loving another person and/or that someone is capable of loving him. For that reason, his fated mate must be someone exceptionally strong and fiercely determined to fight past all the walls and barriers he’s put up.
The bigger, badder, angrier, tougher they are…the harder they fall. The love, once claimed, is so much more intense for how hard-won it was.
Here are some of my suggests for romance novels with great examples of a Dark, Brooding Hero.
To start off, I’m going to recommend this Old School classic and arguably one of the best historical romances of all time. Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase. Lord Dain practically sets the bar for dark and broody. It would be so easy to hate him as Jessica initially does. But there is just something about him…
In Kerrigan Byrne’s historical romance The Hunter, Christopher Argent is dark, brooding, and dangerous. Coming from a brutal childhood that didn’t get any easier when he became a man, Christopher should be hard straight through his core. But his deeply hidden soft center is touched when he encounters Millie LeCour.
Lover Awakened is book three in J.R. Ward’s contemporary paranormal Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Zsadist carries deep scars from a tortured past and despite his intense physical and emotional need for Bella, the wounds on his soul threaten to be too much to overcome. But Bella believes enough for both of them and refuses to give up.
Another classic, this one a western historical, Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath, gives us Houston Leigh, a man damaged inside and out by the Civil War he fought in when he no more than a boy. Believing himself broken and unworthy of a woman’s true affection, he almost loses the one woman who is destined to be his.
Vicious is not only the title of this hot contemporary romance by LJ Shen, it is also the hero’s preferred name and his nature. Vicious is brilliant, ruthless, cold, and fiercely determined to hate Emilia. She is everything he is isn’t and everything he needs to have. In a story that spans ten years, this happy ever after does not come easy.
