Where the Book Magic Happens
Have you ever thought about a writer’s life and wondered where does the magic happen? Where are we dreaming up all of these wonderful ideas? It would be so great to tell you I wrote Caught Up in the Cowboy, my latest story about a hot hockey-playing cowboy who comes home to the ranch to recover from an injury and finds a second chance at love with the girl he left behind, while secluded away in a mountain cabin or in a cottage on the beach, but alas, I wrote most of it while sitting in my recliner with my laptop balanced in my lap. Which is why the question of where I write and why is so fun for me, because I literally just got my own office a few months ago, and I love spending time in a room that was created just for me.
We’ve been empty nesters for years now, and since my oldest son has graduated college and is working full-time, we made the decision to turn his room into an office for me. I am a frilly, bling-wearing lover of all things pink and teal, but being a mom of two boys, you can imagine I don’t have a lot of space that screams feminine. Until now….
We starting by taking out all the old furniture from my son’s room, then painted the room pink and white, added book shelves and cabinets for all my reference books and book-signing paraphernalia and brought in my desk, which had previously been buried under a pile of clothes, receipts, and stacked books.
I had such fun organizing all of my office supplies and books and notebooks and pens, and making my new office pretty and functional. We still kept the bed for when my son comes home for visits, but I covered it in pink and teal and throw pillows that depict scenes from Paris and an adorable vintage typewriter. I’d made huge paper flowers for my birthday party earlier this year, and they now have a permanent home on the wall next to my literary awards and pictures of my family.
I also got a monitor, a wireless keyboard, and a new desk chair that make writing so much easier and better for my back than the way I’d been writing for years, which was slumped in a recliner with my laptop on my lap and terrible for my back and neck.
It’s ridiculous how happy I get every time I walk in this room, but I truly just love it. I love having everything in one place and being surrounded by fun memories from past conferences, glittery messages of inspiration, and mementos from my kids and our latest trip to Europe. My new space gives me a place for my creativity to flow, which works out great for my readers who are waiting for the story of the next hockey-playing cowboy in the Cowboys of Creedence series.
And don’t worry, I’ve been working on the story of the latest James brother and you are going to fall in love with him just as much as you love Rockford. For now, I’m getting back to work, dreaming up hunky heroes and spunky heroines who find love, laughter, and their happily ever after.
I’m including some pictures so you can see how much fun my new space is. And I’m even including one with Maggie, one of my favorite writing partners (Cooper, my Golden Retriever, is the other) and also a look into the secret behind one of those cabinet doors. I guess the secrets out now…I love books! I got several of these at the Romantic Times convention, which I will be attending again this year in May in Reno. If you’re in the area or attending the conference, come and find me, I’d love to meet you!
Thanks for indulging me and sharing in the fun story of my favorite writing space.
Caught Up in a Cowboy - Cowboys of Creedence, #1
This cowboy plays to win
Rockford James was raised as a tried and true cowboy in a town crazy about ice hockey. Rock is as hot on the ice as he is on a horse, and the NHL snapped him up. Now, injuries have permanently benched him. Body and pride wounded, he returns to his hometown ranch to find that a lot has changed. The one thing that hasn't? His feelings for high school sweetheart and girl-next-door Quinn Rivers.
Quinn had no choice but to get over Rock after he left. Teenaged and heartbroken, she had a rebound one night stand that ended in single motherhood. Now that Rock's back—and clamoring for a second chance—Quinn will do anything to avoid getting caught up in this oh-so-tempting cowboy…
