Amanda Bouchet, Epic Fantasy Romance to Sci-Fi Romance
Question: What inspired you to write a science fiction romance after doing a very successful epic fantasy romance series?
Thank you for inviting me to Night Owl Reviews! I’m very pleased to be here.
This is a question I get asked a lot since my first series, The Kingmaker Chronicles, was an epic fantasy set in a world based on Greek mythology. I don’t tend to see the space opera setting of Nightchaser as all that different from a made-up fantasy world. While it’s futuristic, the worldbuilding components are all there and all need to be spread out and presented in the same type of way, and certainly without overwhelming readers. In Nightchaser, I stuck to what I love to read and write: action, adventure, and romance. The sci-fi setting is simply a cool new background for all of that and a different way to stretch my imagination.
When I started working on Nightchaser, my intention was to write another fantasy romance. In fact, I did write one almost to the end of a first draft! The heroine, Tess, and her crew from their spaceship Endeavor, were meant to end up in mythological Atlantis after a terrifying escape from enemies in their own time and place…in a far distant future. After writing about Cat Fisa as the heroine of The Kingmaker Chronicles—a character who is a key player in her world, knowledgeable about it, and savvy about its rules and pitfalls—I wanted to write about a heroine who finds herself in the truly difficult position of being a fish out of water. I had Tess splashing down in Atlantis as a futuristic space rebel who didn’t even know how to swim, let alone understand the political, social, and religious aspects of her accidental new home. I was interested in writing about her journey of self-discovery and how she manages to carve out a new purpose and place in life. I also had the intention of eventually tying the two series together, since a story set in Atlantis would have included the same use of the Greek Pantheon, mythos, and magic as The Kingmaker Chronicles.
So what happened? My agent and editor loved the opening chapters of the book that were set in deep space with the fate of Tess and her crew at stake, an evil overlord terrorizing the galaxy, a rebellion in the works, and a heist gone wrong making for a dangerous, high-speed chase. Even though it was a shift for me, we decided to keep Tess in her own universe and era and let her adventures in life and love play out there rather than plucking her from her comfort zone entirely. And while she remains in a setting she knows and understands, it’s one in which she’s still facing plenty of struggles and difficulties, both within herself and without.
Unfortunately, the decision to pursue a sci-fi romance meant scrapping most of the first draft of a full-length novel, which was a little tough to do! Luckily, I had a strong beginning to go on and then just took it from there. I’ve truly enjoyed following this new path. Nightchaser combines so many elements I love to put into my writing: the daring deeds, a tight-knit crew, passion and purpose, action, humor, high-stakes, friendship, and, above all, romance.
I often describe Nightchaser as Robin Hood meets Star Wars. Those two stories unite the things that never fail to get me invested in characters and their lives: love, adventure, and a cause. I hope you’ll try Nightchaser and find yourself invested in what happens to Tess, Shade, and the crew from the Endeavor as their story unfolds in a time far, far away…
Thank you for reading!
