I graduated with a B.A. degree in Literature from the State University Of New York at Oneonta followed by a long and varied career as a civil servant: Social Services Caseworker; Housing Inspector; Radiation Control Unit Supervisor; Restaurant Plan Review Unit Supervisor; and, lastly, Hearing Officer. During my spare time I was the "hands on" general contractor for two homes—my primary residence on Long Island, New York, and a Catskills retreat. Activities I enjoy include scuba diving and skiing.
The animosity between Earth's superpowers breached every boundary. And so, five thousand light years away, on a meteor-fractured planet with a hellish environment, Unión Latino and Coalition established opposing bases-and continued their unrelenting suspicion of each other.
On the inhospitable planet Murkor, Coalition created Zenith, an opulent mining facility where a lucrative mineral is processed. That is until an unexpected obstacle suddenly shut down operations-ending dreams of riches for thirty disgruntled and increasingly belligerent mining techs.
A mere one hundred kilometers away lies Nadir, Unión Latino's deteriorating outpost. It is here that Comandante Garcia and a beleaguered crew must weigh the consequences of their only advantage: They control most of the planet's subterranean water reserves. The one commodity that Zenith desperately lacks.
Which is why Commander Ellis, acting on Coalition's bidding, has arrived at Zenith. Her unwritten orders: Use any means necessary to seize the opposition's resources. After all, this far out on the spiral arm, who would be able to assign cause or determine blame?
Each commander ponders their next move. As tensions increase, there are accounts of something more disturbing. Thought to be devoid of sentient life, it is impossible to ignore the feeling that an enigmatic entity haunts the planet. Are the strange symptoms being experienced the product of human imagination warped by living on a shattered and desolate world?
Or, as many of the colonists fear, they are not alone...
Three months outbound from Earth and the starship Desio approaches its planetary destination, her crew eager to commence a mission of scientific discovery. Kyle Lorenzo, however, has a personal reason for being on board--an inner conflict that will ultimately propel him to explore not only the furthest reaches of an enigmatic ocean world but the nebulous recesses of his inner psyche.
It is during the long and isolating interstellar journey that a physical relationship develops between Kyle and the ship's physician, Kelly Takara. That part is easy. Understanding the reasons for avoiding the emotional commitment desired by Kelly is harder. So, too, is trying to penetrate the mind of Larry Melhaus, the mission's brilliant and reclusive physicist--a failure of communication made exponentially more troublesome when the scientist's disturbing behavior begins to threaten the crew.
And while Kyle seeks a path to comprehending himself and Melhaus, the ship's crew, led by their strong-willed commander, Bruce Thompson, attempt to fathom a planet where none of the precepts of science seem to apply. A world where every preconceived notion of what constitutes life must be re-examined and challenged.
Looking inward. Looking outward. Two seemingly divergent journeys.
Strange if they culminate at the same destination...
