Bryn Falken, a young ethnologist, arrives on the planet Taabori for her first solo field work and uncovers one disturbing mystery after another. In studying the friendly and seemingly primitive Taaboril she discovers signs of incredibly advanced science and phenomenal powers.
Are the Taaboril as primitive as they seem? Why are there so few of them? Who, and where, are the unseen “Old Ones?” Bryn gets a clue one night on the beach when she spots a very different sort of golden Taaboril--one who promptly disappears.
Unraveling these mysteries proves even more difficult as conflicts develop with the contentious miners from the human colony world, Vorda. When one of the Vordamen injures a young Taaboril, Srell, even stranger things happen...the mine disappears. Then all the Taaboril vanish.
Bryn gains an ally in Jared, one of the Vordamen, who is an outcast among his own kind. Together they set off in search of the Old Ones, and an unlikely romance blossoms along the way. What they discover about the mysterious planet could trigger the destruction of the entire human race. Only Bryn, Jared and Srell can stop the approaching catastrophe.
