Family and duty play a huge role in this fantastic western romance. The characters quickly
memories of family members, community members and each other adds a richness to the
story. This isn’t an easy romance where boy meets girl and life is wonderful. Instead, this is where boy and girls think they are having a one night stand and learn that they will have a lot more contact then they ever anticipated. Tanner’s dad is fighting everyone and everything to the point he’s becoming someone Tanner doesn’t recognize. I loved how ranch life and romance intertwined and scenes included things like having a romantic dinner while watching a mare in labor. From the nearby town to the Round Top ranch, you feel as though you are there. I suspect that readers will see more of each as this is the first book in a series. And, as much as I loved this story, I can’t wait to see where this series goes!
Tanner joined the Marines just like his father did but instead of making it his life’s work, Tanner is returning to the ranch he grew up on. His father’s doctor called after his father had his first heart attack and said someone had to come home and lighten the load. Tanner’s brother and sister couldn’t or wouldn’t so that left it to Tanner. On his way to the ranch, Tanner stopped at the local bar for a beer. There he finds a pretty woman. Maybe he’ll get lucky? What he doesn’t know is Julia is only interested because she thinks he’s traveling through.
A Leatherneck by any other name can still kick ass, which is just what retired United States Marine Corps Captain Tanner Wilks plans to do when he returns to his Texas family ranch to care for his ailing father. And nothing will stop him from achieving his mission—not even a lithe, brown-eyed town veterinarian who seems hell-bent on driving him wild.
Captain Tanner Wilks, honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps, returns home to find his father struggling after his latest heart attack. Worse yet, Julia Heller—the sexy new girl in town that he once spent a hot night with—is the resident veterinarian who’s made a home for herself at Round Top ranch, and doesn’t seem to be in a rush to repeat their time together.
It falls on Tanner’s shoulders to take on the ranch and keep an eye on his father before he falls victim to another heart attack. But Julia doesn’t appreciate Tanner coming in or pursuing her. Even if he’s hot as hell and can make her quiver with just a look. Ousting her may give Tanner the leverage he needs to corral his father, but first he has to wrestle with his own heart.
