I absolutely love visiting Allie, Zay and friends. From the Hounds to Shame to an animated gargoyle, each character brings something special to the story and enhances it. The world that has been developed is awesome. While magic is used daily and depended on, there is still a bit of mystery and a lot that non-magic users don’t know about. There is also some secrets that magic users don’t know about too and when they are revealed, they will make a difference on how Portland uses magic.
With Portland on the point of chaos and possible destruction, the magical community needs a leader and fast. The magical wells are tainted and the Authority is coming to remove most of Portland’s magic users. Of course, the Authority is under the control of a mad dead couple but no one but a few people realize that. The Portland magical community agrees that allowing those not normally within its control to join them in this deadly fight and decides that closing the magical wells is the best option. What no one expects is for Allie Beckstrom to end up as the leader. She can’t even use magic without getting sick! But, with the help of her friends and her soul compliment, Zay, she’s planning on doing her best. Will it be enough or will Portland be magically changed forever and evil rule?
Once again I found myself wrapped up in Allie, Zay and Portland’s battles and problems. Though this is the 9th book in this series, it still feels new and vibrant. New readers to the series may feel a bit lost as many of the events leading up to this book happened in previous books and are relevant to this one. However, they may still be able to follow the storyline. But be aware, this is a fast paced, action based story that has very little down time. There is a multilayer plot with lots of complex interpersonal relationships which makes this series so good. Each book builds on the one previous but yet they all are independent of each other.
I’m not sure how Ms Monk does it but each book has me loving this series even more.
For most of her life, Allison Beckstrom has used magic and accepted the heavy price it exacts. But now that all magic is poisoned, it’s no longer just using people—it’s killing them.
With Portland about to descend into chaos, Allie needs to find a way to purify the wells of tainted magic beneath the city. But the only options left to her are grim: attempt to close down magic forever, or follow her father’s plan to set magic into the right hands—even though she’s learned to never trust his word.
Now, Allie will have to make a choice and face the darkness of her own deepest fears, before time runs out for them all…
